As you may have read in my introduction thread, I used to be really bothered by Garbage Pail Kids. A few months ago when I finally started to attempt to overcome this fear, I decided to start drawing my own GPKs as a sort of way to work out the anxiety they gave me. I don't consider myself an artist, or at least not a good one, but I took a stab at it anyway. At first they were kind of crappy, since I wasn't really using a reference. I won't post everything I drew, but I have a picture of the first one I did just because I already have a photo of it. This was an Adam Bomb parody featuring the character Utsuho "Okku" Reiuji from the Touhou Project video games. (The "Gensokyo" in my user name is also from Touhou.) I'm something of what some would call a "nerd". As time went on I practiced and practiced, and tonight I finally made something I think is at least semi-acceptable. Keeping with the nerd theme, here we have a Sailor Moon GPK making an obvious joke. It's a concept I'm surprised hasn't been done yet in this way, but then again the audience of GPK and Sailor Moon don't really overlap that much. Any constructive criticism is welcome, since I'm still trying to get the style down.

Like the names, very creative! Suggest that you invest in some quality art supplies. Clean paper, some real artist pencils and gum erasers. Keep up the good work!!

Yeah, I figured that would be one of the main criticisms. I do have a sketchbook I never used so I'll probably end up using that in the future since I've got more concepts I want to get on paper. Do you have any recommendations for pencil and eraser brands?

Do you have any recommendations for pencil and eraser brands? Staedtler Mars has some decent stuff for cheap. You can get the pencils, sharpener and led all from them. Any brand eraser will do as long as its kneaded rubber. Its the same material along any brand so that doesn't really matter. It comes in a grey bock and is almost like play dough. No streaking or smudging. You can pick up a pencil, sharpener, some led and an eraser about 30 bucks. The mechanical pencils take some getting used to but well worth the learning curve IMO. Looking forward to seeing more art!

Tonight I have another new GPK, one with an idea I don't believe has been done before, although I might be wrong. (repeating a concept is my biggest worry with these >_> ) Here we have an iron maiden GPK, and it looks like it's already got a victim inside. People are still up to debate on whether iron maidens were actually used for torture, but we're assuming here that they were.

This one is one I've been kicking around for a while. I did it kind of quickly but then again it's not too conplex a concept so I don't feel to bad about it. Hangnails suck, we all know that. Sometimes you get those really bad ones that go kind of far. This kid right here has that problem, only worse. I don't believe the hangnail concept's been done before, or if it has been I don't remember. I kind of just made it for the "Hang NIALL" name to be honest.

I can't find any evidence that there's been a card, since a Google search turns up nothing, a GPKStoreAndMore search brings up nothing, and I can't find any names in GPK World's list that could be a pun on "iron maiden", so I'm going to guess it might have been a commission or like a one-off or something.

This was an unpublished idea I submitted back for BNS1. I did a color rough on my own, but haven't done a final. I may revisit it in the future. Feel free to do your own version though!

I like your version, Ira Maiden was a name I thought for mine as well but I didn't write it down since I didn't want 20 names that were puns on iron maiden. >_> I looked into it a bit more and apparently it was a concept that they had in the OS too but they never used it. It's a shame, I think it's a good concept.

Today's GPK is one with a concept a bit too extreme to get a card. It's also a reminder I need to get those art supplies. This one is actually based on some real-life events I witnessed. Years ago I was at a summer camp and the kids I was with decided it would be hillarious to snort salt. This was actually a really bad idea because as you may expect, salt burns like crazy on sensitive tissue like the stuff up your nose. So here we have a GPK who thought it would be fun to do the same thing. As a side note, the name "Snortin' Morton" wasn't meant to be a reference to the salt brand, but when I realized what I did I chuckled a bit.

There's a lot of crossover between GPK and horror stuff these days, so I hope this next concept is appealing to that. Today we have another pop culture GPK, this time based on Ringu/The Ring. The combination of The Ring and Garbage Pail Kids feels pretty natural, in my opinion. The Ring is about a creepy kid. Garbage Pail Kids are cute kids with creepy things done to them. I'd love to see something like a Fright Rags shirt with a design like this on it, I think it would work very well. I was a bit unsure of what the joke of the Kid would be, but I decided to end up having her coming out of a broken TV in a dump (because trash is funny). In this day and age where VHS tapes are dated and CRT televisions are continuing to be phased out, it seems natural that this could happen. Other jokes I considered were having the TV open to outside a window, or having her come out from the GPK movie. If you look near her left hand you can see a case for it, so I guess there's something of that still left in it. In the end I'm pretty satisfied. Thats a great concept! And I like how you practice what you preach since its a full on CPK face It's not a GPK if it doesn't have the face.

This is a GPK that more appeals to the kids, so regardless of that I hope you will like it. (Sorry for the bad quality image.) Today we have a GPK who became a meme, or more specifically an "Advice Animal." This one was kind of a hard to do one despite the simple idea, since I'm admittedly not very good at lettering. You can kind of tell. There's not much to say about this one except the head is based on Leaky Lindsay. Or any other GPK girl with pigtails, really. By the way, if you're less artistically inclined and have a cool idea, let me know, I might draw it for you.

This one was inspired by an event that happened on here a bit ago, so I hope you like it. I don't like glitter, it's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Wait a minute, that's sand. At least with glitter you can vacuum it easily. Despite seeming like a party in a can, I don't think getting glitter bombed would be very fun. This guy certainly doesn't seem to enjoy it. I guess it prooves that a Garbage Pail Kid doesn't necessarily have to be disgusting to be a nuisance, although I guess having the name "Gary Glitter" is kind of disgusting. On the artistic side, I'm not super good at drawing "realistic" people, so pardon that if you may. I've been putting off on getting those pencils for a bit, but I'll probably end up looking into it this week. Not to say that materials = skill, but they'd certainly make my art look better.

The first of two "stolen" concepts, this is my take on the mushroom. I guess the concept is different enough from the original one to say that it isn't stolen, but at the same time I totally took the idea from vajayjay so I guess it is. This was what I considered the only acceptable joke I could do, though more on a joke level than a target audience-friendly level. Because drugs. Between Halluci NATE and Snortin' MORTON, I think I may be doing too many drug jokes, but whatever, this ain't Topps. If you'll notice, NATE here has a bite taken out of his head. Did someone do this to him? Did he bite himself? Is the bite the reason for the crappy attempt at a psychedelic background? That's for you to decide.

Love the quote about sand, classic! I wonder if thats how Jimbo saw the glitter cloud as it exploded, as a sparkly GPK. Sweet tie by the way Don't worry about the pencils, it will take some time to get used to the feel of them compared to what you are used to. Your art probably won't be as good as it is now for a time till you get comfortable with your new tools.

I'm holding off on doing my version of the toxic waste GPK for a while since I'm still unsure of what approach I want to take with it. In the meantime, however, here's a new concept from me that I think is probably one of my best works yet. It's a pop culture piece that i'm sure all you old fogies will get a kick out of. Today we have none other than the Crimson King, or, should I say, the Crimson Kid. Now, King Crimson isn't one of my favorite bands, in fact they aren't even in my top 10. However, there is no denying that In the Court of the Crimson King is a great album, and to many people it is one of the greatest albums of all time. What's probably more famous than the album itself is its iconic cover featuring an extreme close-up of some red screaming guy. Why is he screaming? I don't know, but to me it's a good concept for a GPK mashup. I also decided to include hands based on the actual Crimson King who appears on the inside cover, partly because I ran out of room to show what he's making a face about, and partly because a floating head by itself is boring. Hopefully I don't die after posting this like the guy who painted the original. By the way, if you notice, you can see that all the names for this kid are based on the titles of songs on the album. I figured this would be a creative way to pull it off, no? My personal favorites are "21st Century Schizoid MANUEL" and "The KURT of the Crimson King".

This one I feel the concept is better than the art I'm posting, but I'm not sure I'm good enough to get what I want on the paper yet. Still though, it's better than the first Kids I was posting. While I can't say I'm an enthusiast for them, I find the concept of inukshuk interesting. Found near the Arctic, these stone men were used to guide people in place of people, sort of like that guy on the side of the road you drive by and ask where the closest Burger King is. They come in many sizes and shapes, and it's probably easy to say no two are alike. Indeed, this Kid we have today is unique. He's probably the only inukshuk with hands and feet! Speaking of feet, this is the only other Kid I've drawn where you can see their feet besides TAYLOR Moon (Okuu Bomb doesn't count), go figure. In real life I'd probably be really hard to knock over an inukshuk, but since there's no people around we can presume his arm fell off on his own. That fallen arm was admitedly the hardest thing to draw here, and I don't think I have it down just yet. Perhaps a redo in the future is needed? Here's a question I have for you people reading the thread. I have two ideas with slightly similar concepts that I want to draw. One is with a punching bag, the other is a parody of the game Splatoon. Both are puke jokes (haha, grow up!). Which one do you want to see me do first?
