Yeah ! John Carpenter is one of my favorite movie directors and "They live" is an awesome movie ! ***spoiler*** I always loved the end of this movie : the main character, fatally wounded, lies on the floor (he just destroyed the extraterrestrial base) and raises a last middle finger to laugh at the ETs before he dies...

Stéphane Blanquet is an underground french cartoonist. In this interview ( link), he says Les Crados had a big influence on his art. Blanquet also publishes underground comix with his publishing house, United Dead Artists. He published 6 cards sets which are some kind of Crados tribute. This series is called "Dead Panini Club" and each card is designed by a different artist. Somes exemples : Series 1 Series 2 Series 3 Series 4 Series 5 The 6 sets can be purchased here : www.blanquet.com/marchandises/index.php#contenu

I just found a video from 1989... Roland Topor is interviewed in a TV show about a movie in which he participated. At the end of the video, the host is asking Topor what he thinks about Les Crados controversy. I have to tell you first that Topor is a great french artist. Here come some exemples of his work : SO, when the host of the TV show is asking Topor what he thinks about Les Crados, here comes the answer of the artist (01'11'') : I think they stole everything from me ! (he's joking... or maybe not completely...)The funny thing is how the french and spanish clergy get upset...Arrabal (a spanish novelist) told me : "you know, in Spain, the priests are really mad at Les Crados...

Tomahawk, a french artist, created a cards set inspired by Les Crados. I talked about it here : garbagepailkids.proboards.com/thread/14428/gpk-tributes-french-artists?page=1&scrollTo=184430In his new set called "Los Incognitos" (which is still in progress), he plays with famous people names : "Fidel Gastro(enteritis)" "Kim Juggler" I'm talking about this cards set in this thread because Tomahawk chose to make a card with Cousteau (and reminded the story of the letter on his blog) : "Costaud" (sounds close to "Cousteau") means "hefty".

Tomahawk is another french artist who created a cards series inspired by Les Crados. And he did it on scratchboards ! He achieved a first 80 cards set called "Los Trashos". Here come some exemples (not the most "trash" of the series) : This one is really funny (translation attempt : "Axel Erate")... You can see all the cards on the blog of the artist : lostrashos.blogspot.fr/2012_04_01_archive.htmlThis series has been published by Le Dernier Cri (a french underground publisher) and a set can be purchased here : tomahawk.bigcartel.com/product/los-trashos

If some people -like Cousteau- blamed Les Crados for being a danger, some others laughed at these protesters, like Cabu (a famous French satirical cartoonist) who made this caricature: Cousteau-la-censure (the name of the character) means Cousteau-the-censor… [edit] RIP Cabu...

That's awesome. It reminds me of a lawsuit Carl Sagan had with Apple about using his name as a project codename, so they changed it to "BHA" (Butt-Head Astronomer).

"Parents ! If you don’t react immediately and energetically against this spirit pollution, don't be surprised if your children let themselves drift and eventually take heroin."Yeah, I know when I was a 7 year old kid, as soon as I bought a few packs of GPK at the corner gas station with my lunch money, I visited my local heroin dealer. In the second series, Avimages (the firm who adapted the GPK in France) used #349 Polluted Percy / Barnacle Bill to laugh at Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his letter : in French, this character became “Jacques-Yves Aladérive” -translation : “Drifting Jacques-Yves”. In the “Crados” albums, a funny sentence is written under every card and here is what can be read under “Drifting Jean-Jacques”: Jacques-Yves steals every single Crados card which is lying around

Discipline remains freedom’s bulwark. It sounds like a sentence extracted from Orwell’s 1984… The worst part of it is that I really liked this guy when I was a kid. Every Sunday, one of his documentaries was broadcasted on French TV and it was always fascinating for me. It made me discover the secret world of see… It seems this guy was talking about animals way better than he was understanding human beings…

In the late 80's, Panini stickers had a lot of success here in France. I still own some of the stickers albums I purchased when I was a kid : soccer albums, movie albums (ET...), animated series albums (Thundercats...). But when "Les Crados" series were released, it was a real tsunami. My friends and myself were fascinated by these cards. I can remember the newspapers and the TV news talking about "Les Crados" phenomenon and how some people were saying these cards were a danger for kids. A debate took place in the National Assembly. Even le Commandant Cousteau wrote an open letter to denounce these cards... Just wanted to share this letter with you to let you know how surrealist it is... Here comes the original letter (picked from www.lescrados.com/) : And the translation (sorry for the rough english ) : The Garbage Gang
No, it’s not about chemical, industrial or atomic pollution. The Garbage Gang is now attacking the youth, because their creators decided to make a fortune by polluting the spirit of our children.
“La bande des Crados” just spread in newspapers kiosks and broke into all our schools. Surprise and dismay for most of the primary school teachers and for the fraction of parents who still care about their children.
Tintin or Gaston Lagaffe adventures are going to be replaced by Honoré Vapété (I’m not inventing anything), Jeanine Lapine, Pascal Troudeballe or Mathieu le Dégueu and his friends adventures. A large stickers album is given for free to children, but each pack -containing 4 scatological stickers- is sold for 2,50 francs. A great contest is offered to children who will write the most disgusting story […].
Bravo, misters “American pofiteers”, Bravo to he French team who imported so well the garbage tsunami, Bravo to the few psychiatrists who see there a safety valve to some too-often-repressed “vile instincts”, Bravo to the authorities who tolerate these abuses for freedom sake ! This is the kind of laxity that generate excessive reactions. These obscene portraits are already sold by millions.
Parents ! If you don’t react immediately and energetically against this spirit pollution, don't be surprised if your children let themselves drift and eventually take heroin. Don’t be surprised if the excessive tolerance of Occident generate fundamentalisms success we just condamned.
Discipline remains freedom’s bulwark.

That would be sooo cool if a part of the movie was dedicated to the foreign releases... But it would be a colossal work to talk about all the releases and to explain how the GPK phenomenon was received in foreign countries...

Another one thanks to this EXCELLENT website dedicated to Les Crados : www.lescrados.com/This drawing by the french comics artist Jean Solé was used for the cover of a famous comics magazine ("L'Echo des Savanes") in 1978. The page is extracted from his comics "Carnets intimes" and Solé explains how he discovered that his drawing concept was used for a GPK card (OS5 Handy Randy / Jordan Nuts) : In the early 90's, the Crados phenomenon spread in schools playgrounds. The symbolic card of this series, from the USA, was a non-signed plagiarism of my "L'Echo des savanes" cover. Encouraged by my colleagues, I took legal proceedings. Then I learnt that the anonymous person who made this plagiarism was Art Spiegelman who was doing there a casual job. Art, that I admire, confirmed the information to me.

Just found this video on Youtube : I didn't remember there was a video clip at this time (or was it made later ?). Anyway, the lyrics and the video are really cheesy... PIC 1: Les Crados 45rpm (7") & cassette PIC 2: Compilations featuring Les Crados- 45rpm (7") & CD PIC 3: The Les Crados music was produced by M. Head (Murray Head). The same artist that recorded this one hit wonder. -TCT GPKUG Admin Wow TCT, this vinyl compilation features a few TV series I was watching when I was a kid... I ignored Murray Head had produced Les Crados. He's an english singer/actor but he worked a lot here in France (he is francophone) where he's pretty famous, that could explain why he was led to work on Les Crados.
