Hey all! Been a while As part of our Mars Attacks: Uprising Kickstarter, we just launched a special wax pack of GPK mashup cards! These will feature new art, and be printed/formatted to look like classic Mars Attacks cards, all featuring Alien Ian! Still in the early stages of figuring out exactly what the art will depict (maybe this community can help!) but right now you can get one with a $10 pledge! Get as many as you like, $10 a pack!

Hard to tell how many have been ordered, but jus 41 new backers have joined at the "Add-On" level since we announced. I suspect this will wind up being a very limited pack! Would love to get feedback on what kind of characters and art we should create, and what the wrapper should look like.
Should the wrapper be a parody of the classic 1962 Mars Attacks pack, but with Alien Ian, and a logo that says "GPK ATTACKS"?

Maybe inspired by the Bukimi Kun wrapper but using Alien Ian.

We have printed some flourescent type wrappers, i think for Buff Monster's Melty Misfits, but they're TREMENDOUSLY expensive and hard to get right. I'd like to stay away from that. But I do like that visual style, with the banner across the bottom.

Garbage pail kids on the banner please and not gpk only if possible. I am already in on the ks. Gpks just make it that much better.

I still like the idea of making a mashup "GPK ATTACKS" logo though, we'll have to find a fun place to put it. Maybe on the back of the cards or even the back of the wrapper. Or maybe a rare variant wrapper. We've talked about making rare variants that we don't even charge for: we just throw them in as bonuses, so for example, some people who order might get 2 packs instead of the 1 they ordered.

Looking for some suggestions from the GPK community for this pack! What should the cards depict? The one thing we CANNOT do is GPK-ish character cards, they should be full story scenes like Mars Attacks.
But a few options i've considered:
1) re-presenting classic Mars Attacks cards, but with GPK characters, like what we did in 2015 with "Slime Captive". 2) A new sequential story told in 6 cards 3) A new non-sequential story told in 6 unconnected story cards, like Mars Attacks (where each card is it's own story, but all take place in the same "world").
Any other ideas?

Hey I put in for 3 packs awhile back and would love some gpk characters interacting with Mars attack aliens.
I am not particularly keen on more Alien Ian as I got the one you guys did last time. And in the last couple years Topps has more then worn me out reusing the same characters ad nauseam. And Ian was featured on the cover of the comic book, has more than a handful of Topps cards including the one from you. Same with Unzipped zack, messy tessy, and others overused.
So for me I would love to see characters that come from OS but have not been used to death. Ashcan Andy for instance is perfect for a space themed card.
I will have to think on the other options you presented! Thanks for taking the fans into consideration.
I also am for the original garbage pail kid header. The mashup would be cool for a variant cart or wrapper though!

Love the first option you mentioned most: re-presenting classic Mars Attacks cards, but with GPK characters Or this would be second. A new non-sequential story told in 6 unconnected story cards, like Mars Attacks (where each card is it's own story, but all take place in the same "world" Btw, I did the add-on for a pack when it was up on Kickstarter! Kicking myself in the pants for not having bought the set at the time the Kickstarter was open.

Thanks for the input! I'll be pouring over all this and start to develop a concept. I do like the idea of incorporating other GPK characters, but I'll need to get Topps' approval. Hopefully they won't limit us to Alien Ian (the mashup came about rather quickly, and we didn't even present them with a solid idea, so no idea what the restrictions are, to be honest).
More ideas are always welcome! Jason Crosby is keen to start drawing, but I want to make sure we have the BEST idea before we get started.
-Adam.

I'm so confused by this entire kick start. i paid 60 bucks cuz i want 6 of the GPK style packs. i didn't actually get to select that I want the packs, just that I am going to get 'add ons.' they took my money. i don't understand how to tell them i want 6 gpk packs. i don't understand their timeline. it's starting to get lame.

Not sure if that's the norm, but I had no problem getting my card last time, so expect no problem this time. Having pitched in for movies to be made on kickstart and indiegogo, I am used to things taking time to be made right and distributed and so far never been disapointed.

This has all been clearly outlined on the updates, and on the campaign itself. Typically, we send out a survey within 30 days of the end of the campaign. This survey allows backers to select their "add-ons" (in your case 6 GPK packs), fill out shipping details, etc. Because of COVID, because Tom (SideKick's owner) has had to temporarily close shop, and is focusing 100% of his present time to producing PPE masks for his local hospital, we've delayed the survey until early June. As for "the timeline" it has, as I said, all delineated clearly in the campaign. We have not even begun creating art for the GPK portion (Crosby is busy at the moment homeschooling his kids, and working on the "Mars Motors" cards). Production for the entire project (which requires the creation of 80-100 new paintings, dozens of packconfigurations, dozens of different items--from cards, packs, boxes, and binders, to posters, metals, relics, pins, and patches) is scheduled for this fall. We expect to ship just after the new year. Yes, this is while. But we are not Topps: we are a company of TWO people, both of whom have other work. Our packs and boxes are hand wrapped, folded, and assembled. We take great care and make great effort to produce top tier products.

Thanks for your continued support, Tony! I'm slowly narrowing down the concept for this pack: I am leaning towards creating an ALL NEW six card "alien invasion" story featuring existing or new GPK characters. Last time, we parodied an existing Mars Attacks card, but this time, I think it might be fun to do entirely original scenes. Any ideas? I think the basic concept is "Martians invade a world of GPK characters". I am totally open to creating NEW Garbage Pail Kids characters, but also to re-using existing favorites.

So after giving it some thought....
I LOVE the idea of a ALL NEW storyline. This is more fun and creative for you and the artist, and for us as the buyer.
I would personally like to see a mix of recognized (not overused) OS characters, and new. I like what Greenlight Collectibles did with the cars. 5 actual gpk characters and 1 all new exclusive to the set character. In this case I would LOVE the six card story-line featuring recognized os characters, and 1 Bonus card that is exclusive to this project with a newly created character....this would again be fun for the artist to get a chance to create his/her own GPK mash-up creation and is fun for us too. This BONUS card, I would freak out if it were a die-cut CPK style GPK sticker with the original banner, a peel here, and an art back.
As far as the art. Topps has never fully taken advantage of its online ability. Online sets are bought on credit card by adults. Usually for the adult kid like me that never grew up. The retail sets are accessible to actual kids and all. I equate them as such.......online "could be" the R-rated HBO of cards, while the retail sets stick to the "edgy as it can be" Network TV. I would like to see more R in my cards and less silly PG-13.
Here is a list of characters I would like to see from OS 1-5. Many I love from these sets like Rock E. Horror or Bonnie Bunnie, I can't figure out how they could work in. So, I picked stuff I could actually see in a fight or scene with an alien. For instance, Sticky Rick stuck in a bunch of dismembered GPK guts while at war with the aliens.
13a Ashcan Andy, 57a Tommy Gun, 82a Slain Wayne, 94b Karate Kate, 99b Beaky Becky, 123b Sticky Rick, 129a Second Hand Rose, 137a Max Axe, 142b Bruce Moose, 155a Spikey Mikey, 156a Warrin' Warren, 164a Teddy Bear, 162b Yicchy Mickey, 166b Gored Gordon, 177b Meltin' Milton, 188b Mel Meal, 192b Delicate Tess.

A few things: first, we cannot do stickers. Per our deal with Topps, they have to be retro old-school Mars Attacks CARDS using GPK characters. Second, we are limited-- at this point-- to 6 cards. I think they want to keep the project limited in scope to avoid taking away attention from their main GPK series, and I totally get that. The storyline we're pitching is that the GPK are kids (ala muppet babies) who live in some kind of f**ked up orphanage run by horrible adults. Alien Ian and other GPK Martians arrive, causing all kinds of horrific mayhem, and in the end we discover they're just kids without a home, and wanted Earth to live on. So the GPK's allow them to live in the orphanage, but only if they agree to vaporize the terrible adults.

So far here is what I have:
Card #1: THE INVASION BEGINS! Similar to the original card #1 from 1962, Alien Ian directs the Martians forward-- towards the "Garbage Pail KIDS HOME" building. Regular humans (not GPK) run for cover. Saucers descend from above!
Card #2: SMASHING D. EMILY (a play on "Smashing The Enemy" a card from 1962). A girl GPK, with the head of a hammer, smashes the dome of a Martian (note: all Martians are Alien Ian).
Card #3: ROBOT TAYLOR (A play on "Robot Terror") An alien Robot with a GPK face rolls through town blasting as it goes. One of it's mechanical arms tosses a human into the air.
I have not written #4, #5, or #6 but I know that the final card will see New Wave Dave and a Martian hanging as pals as the world around them burns, and regular humans melt from ray gun fire. The idea is that, at the end of the story, it turns out that the Martians just wanted friends, and the GPK took them into the Kids Home.
I want the other two cards (4/5) to include at least one new GPK. I know he's overused, but it just makes too much sense to include Adam Bomb blasting some Martians!
Thoughts?

If you were wanting to stay original series then you have Haley's vomit, Spacey Stacy and Alien Ian.

I may include Luke Puke in one card just projectile vomiting on a Martian in the background. Will look at those others, and see if something strikes me. I wish we could make this a bigger set! So many great ideas.

Using some of the other alien themed characters in the story as a way to show the Mars Attacks characters that the GPK home world is safe and they are the example of it. Maybe even a love story somewhere with spacey Stacy. Can throw in heartless Hal as cupid.

We just started on the first card. It's a play on the first MA card, "Invasion Begins." Further cards will be more original, but I want this first one to really be a key image, and felt a take on that classic image was appropriate.
As it's Jason Crosby's first take on official GPK art (beyond sketch cards) I am giving him very detailed notes on the characters because I want to really nail the classic GPK look.

Now that Mr. Crosby has finished his Mars Motors subset, we're moving into GPK full time! We are working on card #2 "Smashing D. Emily"-- featuring a NEW GPK character.
The format is a Mars Attacks retro style card, with a character name that parodies a classic MA title. In this case, "Smashing the Enemy."
other ideas:
"Burning Fletcher" (Burning Flesh) "Robot Tara" (Robot Terror) "Harry Fiend" (Hairy Fiend) "Creeping Dennis" (Creeping Menace) "Adam Bombs Mars" (Earth Bombs Mars) "Bernie Cattle" (Burning Cattle) "Shrinking RAY" or "Frost RAY" (The Shrinking Ray / The Frost Ray)
I'd like to have a mix of popular and new GPK characters.
