Ugh, no thanks. Sounds like you'll have to buy packs, so this will probably be riddled with micro-transactions.
I'd much rather have a standard side-scrolling adventure game.

I'd much rather have a standard side-scrolling adventure game. I agree Fuzz. A game along the lines of Nintendo's Warioware series seems to be a much more accommodating fit for GPK. Weird, gross out, totally random, chaotic. That's the order of the day for the Warioware series, and that design model fits GPK's much better than an RPG.😁

Not too excited about the RPG format because it probably means they will be assigning statistical attributes to each kid and we'll have to pay to constantly upgrade our collection -- 99 cents at a time -- if we want any chance of winning battles. Many of our favorite characters could be diminished to numerical pawns used to compete in some virtual sport.
But I must admit I've been wanting Topps to make a GPK mobile game to bridge the generational gap between print and digital, so I wish them success if this app brings new awareness to the brand.
