It's Friday afternoon and it's pissing rain outside so I thought I'd pass the time by drinkin' a Diet Coke (because my job REFUSES to stock Coke Zero in the machine) and posting on the UG!
Today's question regards rainbows. Not those pretty things in the sky that are obviously the work of satan himself (or aliens in concert with satan), but rather the array of differently colored GPK card borders.
I have started collecting a few rainbows from the latest set, and I'm finding that with the autograph card included, there are eight cards to display (white, yellow, green, black, blue, red, gold, auto). But the display cases I've seen hold nine cards. So what am I to put in that ninth spot? For one of my rainbows I got a printing plate, so problem solved there. But what of the other four rainbows I am working on? What of them? I probably won't find (and certainly can't afford) printing plates for all of them.
So what should I put in that middle spot in the nine-card display? An empty wrapper? A double of one of the cards in the rainbow? A tasteful nude photo of Charlotte Rae? I wish I could just jam the blank-backs in those spots, but Topps put them in thick plastic cases. Damn you Topps and your commitment to protecting the items I buy from the Vault! May one of the dark lord's rainbows drag you straight to hell!!!

Sketch of that char is what I would do if I was all into the rainbow thing That would work, if one even exists and I'm lucky enough to find it. But do they release sketches of a character concurrently with the series that character is a part of? Or would I have to wait for the sketch in a future release? Sketches aside, is there a good, cheaper option? It would be cool if Topps had glossy cards depicting the wrapper art and title of the series. That would look nice in the middle of the rainbow display.

I would go with commission sketch they give the character a little flavor when displayed. The wrapper art is cool, a person may even be inclined to make a wrapper placard oneself with a little ingenuity and resinš Another idea is using a foreign card something with cool border or font. I really love rainbows as it gives me an option to not buy a whole set of the series but just the characters I love although the only rainbows I have is chrome and bns1 I still love the options it gives me.

Plenty of custom fan art you can have someone draw up at decent price if you like to keep cost down

That's how I feel about rainbows too. I don't like the new 80s set on the whole, but really like a few cards from it so am putting together those rainbows instead of buying the set. Of course it's getting super expensive, but I'm enjoying it! How do sketches work? Are the artists who did the original cards allowed to do sketches of them? Like, could Brent Engstrom do a sketch of Centi-Pete for me? Or is he forbidden by Topps? And how much do commissioned sketches typically cost? Thanks!

The artists get blank cards to sketch on in addition to the ones they provide topps for the packs. So you have the same sketch card from the particular series but it's direct from the artist and exactly what you want. The artists have a list of forbidden subjects but I don't know if that translates to commissioned sketch cards. No Star Wars, KISS, there are a few more but I'm drawing a blank.
