Interview With Garbage Pail Kids Brand Manager Mark Von Ohlen Check out my interview with the man that makes all the decisions for our hobby! Mark was nice enough to do an e-mail interview with me. We talk about… • The next GPK sets and hints and what’s in store. • The thought process behind expanding the GPK brand. • The Print on Demand movement at Topps and the future (Hint: Lots more coming) • Details on Exclusive Trashy TV set being offered at NYCC • GPK Licensing, GPK Con, 30 Years of Garbage, and much more… • …And yes, I asked him about Chrome OS 3 gpknews.com/2016/09/interview-with-garbage-pail-kids-brand-manager-mark-von-ohlen/

Great interivew! Thanks for doing it and thanks MVO for responding. Other questions and comments that came to me as I read the interview: 1) Why does there seam to be a Huge push on going away from Garbage Pail Kids to what seams more about Garbage Pail Parodies. GPK are intended to make fun of your friends, not of celebrities. 2) I also feel there were WAY TOO MANY Political cards. One after another after another after another.. and from this interview it doesn't sound like it is going to stop. Please just stop. 3) Sometimes when Topps makes a set available at a Comic Con it is only available for resellers (basically). Then other times you sell the extras on your website. Then you print a limited supply at Riot Fest and do not give fans any notice with time to buy tickets or flights. Please at very least give notice to the super fans. How would that notice change anything other than helping out your super collectors? 4) After you and Colin give the go ahead for an artist to paint a final GPK, have you or would you ever NOT accept a final because the art just wasn't up to the GPK look standard? You should have asked him some tough questions like: 1) Do you guys even know what Garbage Pail Kids are? It doesn't seem like it 2) Michael Bay is known for ruining a piece of 80's culture with Transformers. How does it feel to ruin Garbage Pail Kids? 3) My 4yo son wants to be a GPK artist. Can he start tomorrow?

I wish they had asked about the thinner cardstock, and loss of the diet cut. What was the reasoning behind it.

I read the interview, it was a great Q and A. Cory, Im sure he had to keep it kosher with the question, start giving him the third degree and he probably wouldn't have replied. If i could point out one thing...thinner card stock. The watcher makes a good point, why are they producing gpk with thinner card stock?

Thanks everyone for the feedback and mostly nice comments on the interview. I think it was great of Mark to do the interview. Regardless of what you think of his answers, at least he gave a pretty good idea where the brand is headed and what their focus is on. Many of the suggested questions in this thread I considered. But to the point made above, this was my first interaction with Mark. I'd like the relationship to continue, I didn't feel I could be in all out attack mode. I also didn't want the interview to go on too long. I still tried to ask some of the common things collectors bring up, chrome 3, pack searching, and print on demand. I really wanted to get his thoughts on print on demand, and I think he was pretty clear. There is a shift in how cards are being distributed and it's only going to grow. As to the questions about die-cuts going away and back of card art, those I've reserved for Colin Walton. I'm hopeful Colin will return his interview questions soon. I saved the questions around art and card design for him, as I see that as his focus. I'm hopeful Colin 's answers will be just as fascinating to read. Thanks again for everyone's support, hopefully these types on interviews will continue. I think it's great, good or bad, to hear from the folks that run things for the hobby.

A couple of comments. I think he almost answered your first two questions indirectly. He made it clear the online sets were to gain mainstream media attention and try to reach the casual fan. Print on demand is gong to have to be a necessary evil I think if we want to see the brand continue. But like others have mentioned I wish the card stock was a lot better. The Riot Fest set I believe was a license deal with Topps. Riot Fest had to approve the art and controlled distribution. I see it different than the other online or comic con sets Topps does. This was more like the comics with IDW or Funkos.

On a serious note though. It's a good interview, it just solidifies that new GPK stuff is dead to me forever. Also fugg you Topps and your clueless employees. A nutless monkey could do your jobs.

Great interview. Kudos to Jeff for making it happen and Mark for taking the time to answer the questions.
1. It doesn't need to be asked about thinner card stock, no die cuts and no back art on the cards... It's all about getting them out the door as cheaply as possible.
2. I think it's pretty clear by now that them running with the parodies of celebrities and the adult look added to the fact they are going all in on this online exclusive crap tells me one thing. They have to gain new collectors and evolve the brand to keep it going. My guess is this is in attempt to gain a younger audience who has no idea what Cabbage Patch Kids even are or were even born when the GPK's were made in the first place. I've heard it said before that kids do not want to collect cards these days (do I sound old or what, lol) so trying new avenues is a must. My only question is, why even put a GPK logo on these anymore but I'm sure I can answer my own question. GPK has brand power and that's easier to sell as opposed to creating a new card line that has no built in fan base.
3. The comment about pack searching was humorous at best. Telling people to steer towards boxes or cases and use the retail to fill sets. Why then did the last two sets have retail exclusive parallels? I'm not talking about the greens either. I'm talking about the pee yellow and poopalels that only more serious collectors would go for? Whatever though, you will never be able to stop pack searching but at least make sure the packs are not see through which has yet to happen.
Am I interested in or going to be supporting this new model? Heck no, I'm out. Then again I haven't collected much of the new stuff for the last few releases anyways.
Now who has some fresh legit OS boxes for me to crack.......

Well the retail packs have been out for a bit now and it looks like they forgot about trying to stop pack searching. There's still that WHITE see thru strip at the bottom of the packs. Non-see thru wrappers are still hidden in blaster boxes. Don't know why they don't use those on retail packs.
