Over the weekend I binged the new Netflix produced series "Stranger Things" and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!! Takes place in the 80s so it's a great time period piece ;-)
So many homages to other classic and modern horror/sci-fi movies and TV shows including Goonies, Aliens, Poltergeist, Under the Skin, Walking Dead, Fringe, Altered States, etc, just to name a few.
The Duffer Brothers have a created an instant cult-classic. Check it out!

I did the same over the weekend. I liked it a lot mainly because the kid actors were actually decent. Reminded me of movies like Goonies, Explorers, even E.T.

Eleven def played the role of E.T. and the boys played the role of the Goonies for sure. Very nostalgiac. Hats off to the Duffer Bro's for throwing in countless homages to so many different films and TV shows! Here's a small list I noticed just to name a few: Star Wars - Opening scene starts off showing outer space, then pans down to opening scene just like every Star Wars film ever made Goonies - instead of the Truffle Shuffle the bullies made the kid with no front teeth do that trick with his arms. Also the pudding stash he finds is like when they found the ice cream with the "stiff" haha The Shining - when Wynona Ryder charges up to the house carrying the axe Event Horizon - when the tow cable is used to send the scientist into the portal Walking Dead - Wynona's oldest son looks just like Darryl Dixon. When he's about to put down the dear its in the same fashion as when Darryl "puts down" Dale. E.T. - they dress up Eleven up with a blonde wig and makeup just like E.T. Alien - obvious nod to Ridley Scott using the alien pod Poltergeist - daughter walking up the wall reminiscent of "They're here" moment Fringe/Altered States - use of sensory deprivation tanks Under The Skin - the black room where Eleven walks on water is straight out of Under the Skin where Scarlett Johanssen lures unsuspecting humans and walks on the black water but the humans fall in... There's countless others too. Please list any others u find! 🤓 |

So many great references. Fantastic show! Geektyrant (website) also did an analysis of all the references that the show used and they had probably close to 10 sources from the 70s and 80s. Yours looks at newer stuff too, which is probably more accurate in a lot of ways. But they also had Carrie, the Shining, Stand By Me, and a couple of other references in their list. But I'd be remiss if I didn't also say that the show uses some great props, such as the Masters of the Universe, which was my favorite cartoon and toy line as a kid. And of course, it's very well cast...just like the Goonies and Stand By Me.

I heard and read bout it .. read alota of the posts here on it ..so last week wife and I slowly watched it ....ugh!!!!!!! After first episofe I wanted more more ...she would only watch 1 episode a day ...bitch lol...jk ...the show was very cleaver ..it def gave u that feel from 80s granit I was 3 in 83 but El eleven was an amazing young actress..it was well casted ...well written I had a few issues with it but all in all I give it A-.... and I hope they really do make a couple more ....and honestly the posts here made me just say f it ..and put it on .thanks guys .....

I just finished a binge of Strangers aswell, loved the 80's movie feel like all the refs you mentioned. Made me wanna grab my mates and go on my old BMX adventures again! like the awfully great BMX Bandits film

Must watch soon :-) So now that lots of people up here have seen Stranger Things I'd love to hear your theories on Eleven, the Flea, the Sheriff and his daughter, what happened to Barbara, etc. Spoiler Alert!!!! ----------------------------- Anybody notice anything strange at the end when Eleven has the flea pinned against the chalkboard? 😮 Is the sherriff's daughter "Ten" or a previous subject, still out there in the upside down? She didn't have the same telekinetic capabilities as Eleven for the mind experiments so she got sick. Remember her stuffed tiger in the upside-down? Maybe planted there by the men-in-black, maybe not. Either way, as a father the sheriff is determined to find his daughter. Does Barbara turn into the Alien pod at the end, thus spawning a new Flea? And that's why females are used as nests, and the boys are used to spread the worms back into their own reality. Will spit the worm into the drain. Pretty soon the whole town will be acrobat/flea hybrids!! 😦 Would love to hear your thoughts 👍 |

She was raised by her family, etc, not kidnapped like 11 was and so forth. If she was a part of MK Ultra, she would have never seen her parents. I think she was just a sick child who unfortunately died. But I may be wrong. Anyway, Hopper's daughter's stuffed tiger is just like the one 11 had in her room at the Hawkins National Labaratory. Maybe he snagged it when they went back in to get Will and left it for her there, anticipating she would somehow be relegated to the "upside down" at some point. It's interesting to note that the Hawkins school's mascot is a tiger. "Does Barbara turn into the Alien pod at the end, thus spawning a new Flea? I love hearing diff theories on this show. So during the end scene when Eleven has the flea pinned to the chalkboard, when Eleven raises her hand, the flea raises its hand but the opposite one, mirror-image 😮 I believe the flea was spawned from Eleven's subconsciousness, via her telekinetic abilities. That's why the flea mimics her in movement at the end. All of those thought and sensory-deprivation experiments and being caged like an animal caused her fears and loneliness to build up until she went into her own subconsciousness and manifested those fears into the flea. She apologizes a lot for it being "her fault" too. Not exactly her fault, but it came from inside her brain! Just a theory but interesting to ponder. 🤔 |

Such an awesome shirt. And yes it does!
And there are so many variables, known and unknown, that it's hard to really determine the origin of the demogorgon and its relationship with 11. But one thing is certain: They are they have a psionic bond that inextricably links them.
Another thought: What if 11 actually took will to the "upside down" right before the demogorgon got to him. That would explain why he was able to elude the monster for so long and also would explain her reaction to seeing Will in the picture before she knew who he was...

I'm 2 episodes in. It's difficult because Mario Odyssey came out today and the Mummy Demastered came out Tuesday. Too much cool s**t and not enough time. I tried to split my time between Stranger Things 2 and Mario Odyssey. I'm starting episode 6 and finishing tonight. I wish there were more episodes in the season. I finished Season 2 and I have 600 moons in Mario. I'm a bit underwhelmed with the second season, I thought it ended just as it was getting going. It took way too long for them to get from point A to point B in this season and they took too many uninteresting tangents with the characters. Every episode in season 1 had significant meaning. This season didn't feel that way. It was still a decent show but it seems like they are just trying to pad it's content with filler now. |
