During your course of collecting GPK as a kid did you ever run into any GPK Drama? Any kind of negative stuff that is still rattling around in your head from the 80's. For example: Did you give a girlie a GPK only to have her turn you down? Did someone steal your GPK? Were your favorites destroyed in some kind of natural disaster?

For me I lent out my Drednok's GI Joe vehicle with the driver (Thrasher) to a friend from school for his stack fo GPK's. I took care of his stack and he had a lot fo GPK's I didn't have. After a week or a month or whatever I gave his stack back all nice and as good as when he lent it to me only to get my vehicle which was pretty new all fugged up. Missing doors and motor and all kinds of other things. I was pissed. So that was one of those times someone screws you over and I guess many more situations like that came after that, but never about GPK's. Another time my teacher took my whole collection of GPK's that were all stacked up like a new game of Jenga. She took it like the first week of school and she said I'll get it back at the end of the school year. So I waited and waited and when your a kid it's like forever. When the last day of school came I think I got a detentioon as well or it was like an extra long day atleast that's how it felt. So I politely asked her with my eyes all wide as you can imagine waiting a whole year for them back. When she reached in her drawer she pulled out like 3 huge stacks and she asked which one was mine....I shrugged my shoulders. Then she said, "Just take them all." I got teary eyed of excitement. That had to have been one of those great moments.

I would've dodoed in my pants has i obtained extra GPK after waiting for so long! Nice.
I remember this one kid having some GPK cards that he brought to school to show off. He had Slimy Hymie (i've always thought that Hymie was just a made up name), Brain Les, Doug Slug, and Mitch Mit. I remember because they were all OS15 cards. I just cut to the chase with this kid and asked him politely if i could have those cards (yeah, i was one of those kids). He of course told me no but i could look at them. So i held on to them then later on during the day he asked for them back. I pulled the ol "i placed them on your desk earlier today" bit and that i didn't have them. Though in the end i felt bad because he was searching like a mad man all around his desk for those cards. but those particular GPK are still on my toy box from when i was a little kid to this day

So I remember waaaaaaaaaay back when I obtained my first OS2 cards. I was hoarding GPK's like candy...yet I could only get my hands on OS3 and OS4. My friend Steve had an almost complete set of OS2 and I was soooooooo jealous because the cards were amazing. Every time I went to his house I would try to trade for some but was never able to get 'em.
:choice:
Well...Steve and his family left on vacation for a week...and we were in charge of watching his house. Wouldn't you know it that I turned into the biggest dickhead friend that ever lived and I ganked some of his OS2 doubles. I ended up getting greedy and it seems like I took about 20 or so (of a stack only an inch and a half tall). So I am SURE he noticed. He never said anything about it - and we stayed friends for another 10 years until college did what college does (breaks up friendships).
To this day, I get a little sour feeling in my stomach whenever I look at Ugh Lee (that is the one of the ones I remember taking).
:nope:

hahaha criminals...
I wish I had stories like this, but similar ones with pokemon... (I had cards stolen from me two different times, and one time, I had a little "pokemon card stand" where I was selling my extras to buy another pack, and this kid comes up and he looks at one of my "rarer" cards, he told me he would trade me this holographic card I needed, so of course I was all excited..after I traded, I noticed something really weird about the card..it wasnt shiny, I realized, the kid had copied the card in a scanner, and glued the cut out copy to a shitty card..and I never got my good card back..asshole)
I do remember though, when I first started collecting GPK, I brought a huge stack to school to show off to my friends..Of course, they didnt care too much because it was all about pokemon
but my Math teacher, a really cool guy, came over when he heard about them, and he looked through them so lovingly..his eyes lit up and he started laughing..it was weird
and then he was like oh, I remember tha, wait, thats my favorite.so I gave him some

I have a couple of GPK drama stories - here is one. I remember hanging out with this kid who was older than me by like 2 years. This was around the time of OS6. I had a nice stack of GPK. You know how you'd carry them around and they'd get all fugged up to the point that you memorize the damage to each card? Well somehow I ended up losing my stack of GPK while playing outside. I was fuggin devastated because I had amassed a nice collection. It was as if you killed my fuggin dog except it was my own fault. A few days my buddy came by and wanted to play. He had a nice stack of GPK. I was looking through them and I noticed that these cards had the exact same flaws that my cards had. The son of a bitch stole them from me and made me think I lost them. I confronted him about it and he denied it. So somehow I convinced him to let me take the cards in my house. I went in there and put the GPK back in my empty OS4 box. I then told my Mom that the kid outside stole my GPK and I just took them back. To my surprise she took my side and went out there and told that jerk to dip and never come back. I couldn't fight the kid because he was in middle school and I was in elementary school. Either way I got back my beloveds and never saw the thief again. ;D

I tried to trade everything BUT GPK for other GPK. I remember not having any OS2 (or OS1 for that matter) and I ran across a dude with a Brett Sweat at snack time. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Up to that point I didn't know anyone with OS2 or OS1 GPK. I asked him to trade it to me. I didn't have any GPK on me at the time because I didn't want the teacher to take them so I offered him my fuggin snack. A Little Debbie Swiss Cake Roll. Now, when you are a kid you'd kill a bitch for some snacks. You were always looking for that sweet stuff. He accepted and I had my Brett Sweat. My first OS2 card. A few hours later as I was studying the detail in the muscles the fuggin teacher came up from the back and ganked it from me. I never saw it again. I had my Brett Sweat for 2 hours tops.

I remember tracing the cards with trace paper, that was fun until the teacher caught me... happened several times. Here is my story, I used to trade stickers (cars, cartoons...what have you) with a few of my buddies back in 1st-2nd grade, so I had a few tradin buddies. Well, by the time 3rd grade rolled around, the skickers had been replaced with GPKs and the stickers you put in the albums (I remember having a dinosaur album that I liked a lot) Anyway, GPK definately the thing though and we used to trade damn near every recess with may friends. Well one day I tried to make a rediculous trade (I cant remember exactly but I foresure was NOT offering a fair trade) and my buddy pretty much was like "hell no" and I remember being pissed. Well, later that day, I kinda was still pissed and kinda wanted to get back at my friend. We used to play this game where we would hold hands and spin as fast as we could to make each other as dizzy as possible. Me being sorta mad at my friend, we started spinning fast and I let go of him..... He went FLYING and landed on the side of a raised sidewalk and broke his arm in two places..... (had this giant cast for awhile) I still kinda feel bad about it when I think about it. But as far as he ever knew, he thought it was an accident and I never got in trouble for it. GPKs will make you do evil things!

The GPK craze hit when i was in 1st grade. I remember being one of the only kids in my class that had GPK. Most of my freinds parents wouldnt let them have any but my parents didnt care as long as i bought them with my own money. So when i showed up a school with new GPK's (OS2 and OS3 i think) they would usually crowd around me to see what they were missing.
I remeber once i brought about 100-150 of them at one time for show and tell but before school so many kids were crowding around me trying to look at them that a teacher was concerned and confiscated them from me. I was so fuggin pissed. I had to get my parents to come down to school after class to reclaim them.
I also remember having a no number semi colin and my cousin who was 5 years older than me convinced me to trade it to him for some OS1 cards (i thought i was getiing a better deal because i had no OS1 and i thought it was a common card). As soon as the trade was complete he started juming around for joy and told me that it was a rare error card worth 50 bucks. I was so fuggin pissed. I remeber him putting it in a screw down card holder and placing it on his wall. Everytime i went over to his house i saw it and remebered how i got screwed out of it. I wanted to steal it back but he was twice my size and im sure he would have killed me if i did.

Freakin' awesome stories GPK guys and gals... crackin' me up.
I've been on both sides of the fence. I've been ripped off. I've raped people's collections. Friends, family, strangers... you name it. You could be next.
I remember an inside "recess" because it was raining one day in Jr High/Middle School and this guy Jeff had brought all of his OS2 singles to school... they were spread all out over one of the cafeteria tables and there must have been 10-15 people sifting through the cards, massive chaos with hands and arms everywhere... and this kid was acting like he was GPK King with this huge smug wiseass smile upon his face... then I saw it... "Fran Fran"... What??? *rubbed eyes* ... WTF??? ... *rubbed eyes again* ... my heart started to beat like a drum set on acid... I held it in my hands in utter disbelief, and then I found a second one for my twin brother and pocketed them both as quickly as possibe, and left the third one for Jeff, the GPK King.
I remember Topps had responded to my GPK inquiry about the rumor of there being a "soft boiled Sam" puzzle that was going rampant in our community. The lady at Topps squashed the rumor mill and said my 'friends' were just kidding with me. I was also writing to Roxanne Toser back then asking about GPK, etc, because she was one of the hobby stores listed on the back of the Topps letter I got back... so I had quite a few letters from her and her old sale pamphlets (which listed the french and german 1st GPK sets for $25 each... had I only known then what I know now...). At any rate... all of that mail disappeared and I accused my best friend Stuart at the time... I was distraught. Miraculously... the letters reappeared after I confronted him... the very next day.
But I'm not innocent... I have to admit I stole a small stack of his 1st series cards because I HAD to have them... I was desperate to get those crazy cool cards in my grubby little hands. I didn't think he'd care... I only took a small stack and really wanted to give my brother Jason the "Jason basin" card. Long story short... he noticed. I felt guilty... and figured it wasn't worth losing a friend... so I handed the stolen goods back.
Family members will f**k you over too. Trust no-one. As I was happily swinging my legs on my bed looking at my cool OS2 and OS3 sets... and my very small, inadequate partial OS1 set of 25 singles... I came across "fishy Phyllus" in my "acne Amy" spot... this did NOT register for a few minutes... I just stared at this impossibility... this confusing moment of collation inability... then it dawned on me... my older brother had a new girlfriend Amy. I stood bolt upright and tore to my brother's room... this was in the A.M. and we were about to go to school... and there it was... right on top of his dresser ready to bring to school to give to his new lady. I screamed like a little girl with her panties tied up in knots, got all red faced, threw out some death threats, and raced back to my room with my saved GPK card. Close call.
I was at our local grocery store, Eagles... after being shut down several times by my step-dad at the checkout counter whether or not I could get some candy or gum or whatever... I remember having $.27 cents in my pocket... and I was looking at the OS4 packs they had... just kind of romantically strumming my fingers across the cute cherub face of "Adam bomb" and feeling the waxy coolness of the packs... when one of the packs flipped over and was already opened... someone had taken the gum out. Now... after knowing about "Fran Fran", I had come across three of the four name changes for the 4th series and knew from the "oak Kay" checklist card that I was missing a fourth one. And low and behold... there it was. The nervous sensation of a five finger discount ran through my body... and I about had the cards in my pocket when I look over and saw the cashier lady looking at me... so I walk over and handed over $.26 for the pack... she says "This pack is open, do you really want it?"... Yep. "Did you open the pack??"... NOPE... "You sure you want the pack???"... YEP!!! As my step-dad yelled... "Come ON Aaron!".
He never liked me collecting GPK, thought I should be collecting sports cards like my brothers. My twin and step brother stopped collecting GPK after the 4th series. And my step-dad tried to get my Mom to get me to quit during the 5th series. I remember my Mom's old friend who used to babysit me when I was really young came over to visit... she smelled and was even poorer than us and I didn't think I liked her... she brought me a 5th series pack when she came to visit one day... it had the one missing "cracked Craig" card that I needed... I looked at her differently after that moment. May she rest in peace... or pieces.
I did become a freakin' thief later though... my step-brother taught me the ins and outs of pocketing GIJoe and Transformers. We'd go on shoplifting sprees. He finally got caught stealing a Cabbage Patch Kid for some girl he had a crush on. Crazy f*cker -- he should have stuck with GPK.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh.... memories....

So toward the end of my GPK collecting spree in the 80's a came across a OS2 Sewer Sue. It was stuck inside of a book at school. I tore Sue out of the book and added just the sticker on a piece of paper into my collection. This was great because I had no OS2 or OS1 GPK. I cherished old Sue like she was the Queen of GPK for a long time. Then one time I forgot to take it out of my pants and I remembered it just as my Mom was doing laundry. I ran into the laundy room and asked my mom if she found it in my pants. She said she hadn't and I threw an angry fit because I was mad at myself. My mom said then said "It's right here" because she was fuggin with me. Then she tore the thing up right in my face for acting like a kid. That was by far the most devastating thing I had ever seen in my life up to that point. She broke my GPK spirit right then and there. To this day I'm still pissed off about that.

That would have been sh!tty...
Not that this relates... but I had "Frigid Bridget" of the 1st series but the outside of the sticker was peeled away... but I still loved that card because at the time it was my only 1st series character... she was queen for some time.

Oh man, this is the best thread so far. It makes me want to not collect my cards into toploaders & pages, but just let them slide through my hands as a kid, so that I end up with a stack that is thick like two fists (grown man fists...) How jealous I was with kids that had a stack like this.... I only had a stack that was maximum 1 fist thick (a 8 year old kids fist...)
And I can feel the excitement Luiz Diaz had at the end of the year, back in the day. I can truly FEEL the joy he had. Ohhh man, that must have been good...
I very well remember collecting them as a kid, but I am not aware of buying them in the candy shop, I think I was just to late. They released gpk '86 - '88 in Europe, in 86 I was 6 years old, If I look back at it, I was at this time not aware of their existence. By the age of 8 I was, but still too late to buy them in the candy shop myself. Others had them, holding 1st serie cards in front of my eyes and teasing me with it.
I have a similar Sewer Sue story Cory has. But it concerned 'Dronken Dries' (Drunk Ken) in my case. By the time the garbage gang 91 (age 11) was released, I was aware being able to go to the shop & directly buy a lot of them (not a full box though, I remember that I wanted this, but I guess this was way out of reach for me) After a while I had almost the full serie, plus some (40 or so) spare cards. I remember trading these 40 cards for a 1st dutch serie with non original back... This was a fair trade, because these garbage gang cards, were actually not garbage pail kids... For some reason I didn't care what they said, I traded it and looked for hours (must have been minutes...) to the birds & rabbits around my little Drunk friend.
Even though I got a excellent - near mint replacement right now, I still keep this card that I acquired being 11 years old.
Having these garbage gang cards, and to this in the meanwhile also a lot of garbage pail kids, gave me a mighty feeling, I was owning something that was really worth a lot (and everyone claimed gpk would get way much more worth in the future). I remember my little (!) brother always threatening me, that if I would tell he was in love with Barbara, he would take a chance on destroying my gpk, I also gave him a few threads in return, but I always was more afraid that he would get angry and do what he promised. So I did not tell anything about Barbara & I changed my 'secret' spot where I kept my cigar box with gpk's every now and then, just to be sure.
I also remember that a guy (Michael was his name, he really wanted me to know) told me he had the 1 or 2 cards I needed to complete my 6th serie puzzle (as I remember), before we went to his locker I had to give him a few (it must have been at least 3 or 4...) garbage pail kids from the 3th or 4th series. I hoped on a fair trade of course, but when we opened his locker he showed me the cards that were all marked with his name on the front, with a pencil. I couldn't agree on the trade anymore, but in his eyes the trade was done. And by the way; his gpk cards were the ones I needed for the puzzle backs, and the backs were not harmed!!! He wrote his name on it because he was ripped off all the time, he lost more than 100 cards, I should not cry like a baby for this trade. Later on, when we were in high school, the same guy was not that much of a success, and I even think I remember he ended up as a (so called) 'high school drop out'. But I never felt sorry for him, on the contrary...
One more myth that was told to me that a friend of a nephew and his uncle (...) went to the states, and there when ordering a cup of coffee in a coffee shop (not the kind of coffee shops we got here in Amsterdam) you would get a full stack(single fist thick) of mint gpk cards. Back in the day I could not believe that gpk cards on the other side of the ocean would not be as odd as here. As I read on this forum this suspicion of just a myth is confirmed.

As a kid my dad would not let me have gpk's,and one day after coming back from the 7-11 store with some gpk's in my hand I saw my dad walking down the street coming home from work, so i hurried up and hid the cards! Well like in the cartoons I remember him picking me up and shaking me upside down an all my cards came spilling out (and o fcourse he ganked 'em an threw 'em away) I remember it so vividly to this day, I never had the chance to collect gpk's like most kids since I was not allowed and I think its part of the reason why I love them so much now!!

All but about a hundred of my childhood gPK cards are buried in an Atlanta landfill. My mom threw them out when I left for college. She always hated them, mostly because of OS2, believe it or not. Hot Scott threw her into a rage and she took that one card from me, the only one she actually took away. What sucks is I had aquired it through trade! So along in the late 90's she threw them out in a real garbage pail. hundreds and hundreds! The only reason I still have about a 100 of those original ones is they were mixed up in my sportscard shoeboxes. But really, my cards as a kid were in vg condition at best so I wouldn't have them anyway! Do you remember when you saw your first OS1 on the street(not in a card shop)! Ashcan andy was the first I ran across in a friends hand and it was in p-g condition at best. But back then it didn't really matter! In fact it was kinda punk to write on the backs of them(names and stuff), it was kinda rare to find an unmarked card. The first OS2 card I saw was Dead Fred, which was the first GPK card I saw. That one card is what got me buying packs, then os3 JUST came out and a few OS2 packs could be found in stores. I NEVER found a 57 single as a kid, which always disturbed me and helped to bring me back into GPK later. Now I own close to 60 57a/bs. I love singles.

Too many bong hits!

Too many bong hits! Grim Jim WAS my favorite OS3 card as a kid! I remember the first time I opened the green gates and saw it! It was SO shocking!! That's what was SO great about GPK back then! They all had shocking content and imagery, yet they were dolls and for kids! It was the ultimate contrast! Yeah, I remember Ache Amy too! Talk about shocking!
