Everyone knows the UG is home to the real fans of GPK. That is why I am here, and also why I pose this 2 part question to you all.
What do you think about the current state of Garbage Pail Kids, and what is your approach to collecting moving forward?

1A. Really disappointing they cant do better when we all know they could do SO much better. It feel like they are not even trying. I need art from artist like Pound, luis Diaz, Dan Burn W, Ryan M, Meeks..etc to start buying cards again....what they have now is laughable.
1B. However chrome 3 would change my mind!
2. Im only buying final/rough art. And maybe a few loaded or pano sketches.

It is extremely disappointing. The art lacks so much .with the exception of a couple of pieces ..doesn't feel the same. And little changes from peel here. To die cut .the generic backs. Cheaper quality and more quantity. And I'm not even Gona comment on the presidential cards. I'd be here for days and days. Can I. Lame the artist. Some I guess. They do work for for someone that approves and denies there work.
I still buy 1 or 2 of everything. Which I debateing goin forward. Buts it like I already have almost everything from every series. Meaning boxes and fat packs blisters and blasters. So just to end now. Idk if I can do that. If that's The case. Then might aswell sell off everything after OS or ANS. Idk.
But I prefer. (Not part of question) is to continue to build OS1 sets. And I plan to have a very extensive collection of foreign. And I'm well on my way.
But I'm proud to be a member of UG and always will be. A lot have looked out for me and I've tried to repay the favor the best I can. So Thanku for allowing me to be part of this.

First of all, viva la UG.
Topps has done so much to piss me off as a collector directly/indirectly that i haven't bought a base set since the 2015 S1, but i won't even buy the good stuff going forward IE: Funko's or Chrome 3. Its unfortunate, but i'll just keep collecting OS stuff and black minikins.

great topic. you almost have to seperate gpk collecting into 3 diff eras to not go insane. os run, ans run, & everything since....
current state of gpk collecting still seems to be going strong... but in my opinion for what its worth gpk died after ans, although it's still living(reincarnated)in the form of these new things. i think people should live and let live with this new stuff, obviously the new collectors like it, and that's fine. i personally hate topps and gpk ever since they changed to cash grabbing with a million parallels and that made me decide to sell off everything gpk i owned.... and i'm fine with that. i still remember and love the os1-15 gpk for what it was when i was a child, nothing will ever change that.
my approach to collecting going forward..... basically NOTHING at all. topps shlt where they eat as far as this guy goes and i wont shed a dime to them. i spend mine on the secondary market chasing down gpk cheap toys, which is the only thing i still love/collect in the gpk line.

First of all I just have to say becoming part of the UG has been simply the best, I have learned so many things that I can't thank everyone enough for all the knowledge I've learned about GPK. From OS cards to cheap toys to original art to imperial toys and on and on. The art itself is what brought me into collecting GPK and still is, I just really love the artwork so much (the OS art specifically). I still find the ANS art to be pretty cool and the BNS and recent series art to be alright but no where near the original masterpieces. So I would go on buying packs to complete a base set and any other chase card sets such as the 3D effect ones and such, as different color parallels never caught my attention so never went for those. That being said Im happy to have sets of basically all the newer series and definitely proud to have all the OS sets. But since topps release all those online exclusive sets for super high prices I just did not bother even getting a set of them at all and lost interest in future sets. I was kind of happy for a new series coming out but also base off of what topps has been releasing I was not expecting a huge change in artwork which I was right about. Got a single pack and a value pack just because I found the wrapper to look pretty cool but not interested in collecting sets until topps changes the way the artwork is being done. Meanwhile I'll just go on with collecting any cards I need to make my OS sets more mint, expanding my cheap toys collection by trying to complete rare sets. Also making my imperial toys collection bigger as well as original artwork/sketch cards. To make it short and sum up what I'm saying, I'm basically sticking to collecting the originals and not so much of the newer stuff. Sorry if I might of gone a little off topic

I agree with many points everyone has posted. There will always be the Original series. I have favorites from every release and some lame ones I can't stand. As far as the new stuff, really some flimsy stuff being produced but do I stop collecting? No way! I'm still at it and will till Topps kills it or me.

The sate of GPK is alive, at the same time it is a morass of frustration and disappointment mixed in with hope...hope of hitting that hot pack! I think that's why a lot of new folks go buy this new stuff...the dream of hitting a hot pack.
As far as how I collect, simple, I buy what I like and what I can afford. When making a purchase I don't think of it as an investment rather a compliment to my personality, this keeps collecting fun for me. At this time my attention is on chrome, a lot of people dislike chrome but as circumstance has it anything that blings catches my attention.
Another part of collecting for me is foreign cards. I have favorite characters that I started a rainbow with so I could collect and enjoy foreign cards without having to collect the whole set.

I don't like the direction TOpps took the brand. They turned the hobby into getting that rare card, that big hit, the gamble of buying packs in hopes of hitting it big, and got away from what drew so many kids into collecting which was clever concepts and the search for your name or a friends name on a GPK card.
I think it's all but destroyed, but Topps is hanging on to the big money they are getting from the online releases. I wouldn't doubt that eventually they will be all online releases and no mass releases, before completely shutting down the operations. It's a shame really, they have some very talented artists that could do so much for the brand if given the right direction and the green light to create whatever GPKs they want.
For me it's been all Original Series for the past 2 years. I gave up on the new stuff, but held on to the hope that Topps would listen to the old school fans and get back to what made GPKs great. But, they are all about the new business model and increasing sales. I'm sure they are thinking outside the box, keeping up with the times, staying competitive, and whatever other saying big business throw out at the meeting of the minds.

What do you think about the current state of Garbage Pail Kids, and what is your approach to collecting moving forward?
GPK as we know it is dead, and has been since ANS6, or maybe it died the night the Garbage Pail Kids Movie debuted. Yet, the hobby somehow survives despite continual terrible Topps releases, and survives rather pathetically. Maybe I'm more part of the problem than the solution for continuing to promote GPK all these years, and I still buy a handful of packs of each of the new releases -a far cry from what I used to buy, but still... I buy the s**t, I never stopped buying the s**t.
We are all chasing our youth, GPK is just one vehicle, and our vehicle is faulty and sometimes ugly, and not what we remember, and it effects our reflections. By collecting GPK we move forward and move backward at the same time -it's a "nostalgia trip." If John Pound would just simply return and make new Series the illusion of youth would be more clear, but we are stuck with the impostors and substitutes. John Pound is GPK, everyone else is secondary, and usually silly.
Moving forward? I have no real plan, I have everything I want until I realize I don't. In my mind my collection is complete, like obsessively complete, but EVERYTIME I log into UG, even after all these years, I see something someone else has that I now want. The Member Collections section is my crack. UG is the best Garbage Pail Kids site based on that section alone, we simply have the world's best GPK collections all in one place, and no matter when the site slows down and it seems Topps has finally killed the brand, the collectors and fans always come back to hate on the upcoming releases, to trade, to hang with friends, and to post their amazing collections, and I'm just happy the community stays consistent even though the brand does not (maybe that's not fair, because has there been a more prolific time in Topps producing GPK cards than... now?).

Ya I think topps direction was obviously geared towards adults. Online only purchases, politics etc.
Packs aren't cheap anymore and they don't even have bubblegum inside.
Hell I don't even think they are die cut anymore? So they aren't even fun to stick anywhere.
It's all about greed at this point. Topps is a business but without the kids buying the cards then there is no future with GPK. We will get into our 50-60's and this stuff won't even be interesting anymore.
I only collect final art but at the price they are at right now I can only pick up post os9 lol. So until prices start to drop I won't be collecting anything gpk.

Some of you who I've spoken to know, but Adam-geddon will be the last GPK release I work on. I had a good 10 year + run. I will continue to put out my own work in the spirit of GPK, because I continue to love GPK.

You did a lot for the hobby and your art style of GPKs was one of the best. Good luck with the new endeavor, I am looking forward to seeing more of your character creations.

What do you think about the current state of Garbage Pail Kids, and what is your approach to collecting moving forward? Unfortunately, GPK as cards is officially dead to me now. $10 for a single card? That's all I'm gonna say about that. I'm only interested in non-card GPK items now - Funko figures, cheap toys, etc.

GPK will never truly be dead to me. I live off completing my OS sets and foreign, plus there's all that other stuff, Cheap Toys anyone? Plus with the more modern stuff you still have Chrome 1 and 2, sketches plus plates (the good ones from FB and chrome, not the other lousy plates you can get on ebay for $50 bucks). There is so much to collect and hunt down that I can literally collect for years and not run out of stuff to buy.
The new direction is a sad one as it's nothing more then a cash grab by Topps. Ever since they went the parallel direction it went down hill. The newer concepts were not that great to begin with (from OS 10 they were starting to run out of ideas) but now they are literally just drawing celebrities/political figures in the GPK art style. No new characters, just lazy rehashed ideas over and over. I quit buying the cards as of the 30th release.
Back in the 1980's I used to love buying OS packs for the cards themselves. I couldn't wait to see what new characters Topps would come up with every new series. The gum was a throw away as I had too much of it and it was gross tasting to me. The day I realized I bought new packs for the sole purpose of just getting the hit and the base cards were the throwaway was the day I quit wasting my money.

GPK was always a cash grab, Topps never made GPK for charity and the greater Good.

I stopped making noise about Topps a long time ago. I know we collectors are responding out of love and passion for GPK and want it to be just as amazing as the OS days. Think if Topps takes another break for a bunch of years like they did few times before and come back with new series we will just have to see what it brings. But if GPK will drift too far from looking like the OS GPK we know they will only attract temporary buyers from the new generation and it seems Topps will never learn from their old mistakes they keep making over and over and over. Most GPK artists are capable but just can't get the time to deliver on such a crunching deadline. I bet one yearly series a year with no theme and a lot of different strong funny concepts and enough time for artists to draw and paint, backs art back, numbers on front again and 132 cards in a set. GPK should look like GPK and not drift too far away from it, you can't just draw Dora in a different style out of the blue either, same with Disney tons of artists draw each character exactly as that character looks like as it's original concept. GPK style drawing is not for everyone With 2014 series 1 it was already getting worse and from 2014 series 2 I stopped buying and spend no more than from $0 to $100 max on a new series packs or boxes (besides Chrome 2 and 2013 Mini series). Most cards just didn't have that GPK feeling anymore. I only collect what I like and can afford, will keep going at my favorite characters collection (Drippy Dan, Leaky Lou & Leaky Lindsay), the few sketches I like and my insane 2013 Mini series addiction Got back into GPK at the end of BNS2 when they announced Chrome 1 and saved up and bought 320 Target Atomic Value Packs Personally find BNS the best series after OS with strong diverse concepts and the actual art for the cards look great

I have absolutely no desire to buy anything new. I'm just a nostalgia fiend, as that's what got me back in the hobby a few years ago. Opening 25c packs with a stick of bubble gum, finding cool or funny cards, trading them to finish the set, that was the thrill. I'd take that over opening an over-priced pack just to try to pull a #d card or "rare" card. The sketches are the only thing that interest me that comes out lately, and I'm only buying sketches of the old characters.
Even opening packs today doesn't have the same thrill as it did years ago. However, I still love looking at my collection and adding to it. It's a never-ending journey. It makes it more fun when other people are interested, so keep collecting everyone...

I'm glad GPK is still around after 32 years. I'm a base set collector only when it comes to the modern GPK, and I make my purchases in the most cost-effective manner--complete sets only. I hope the brand continues to prosper.
