Now that the 30 Years of Garbage GPK Movie is out. Let's talk about it and review it. I added a poll where you can rate it on a 1-5 star scale. (no half scales, and yes stars and not mushroom clouds or trash cans) Here is my review in typical GOOD, BAD and the UGLY fashion. SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT The GOODI thought all of the artist interviews were interesting and worth watching. John Pound was fantastic. I really like the perspectives from Art Spiegleman and Mark Newgarden. It was fun to hear how the whole thing came to be and how it ultimately was killed. The court case info was really cool. I liked hearing the artist reactions to the new look. I really liked John Pound's perspective on how he basically had to do a GPK a day to meet the deadline and how he made that work. All of the process stuff was great. I liked the corporate operation stuff too. The part about the bonuses was REALLY typical. It's a shame the guys in the trenches never get their fair share. I was really into all of the 80's bits. I really did like what the new guys had to say too. I actually would have liked to see more of that. Zapata's interview about the struggle with getting quality artists was good. It really is a shame, the ANS could have been so much better. I thought the stuff about the items was good. I would have liked more info on that, but I imagine that info was pretty non-existent. I loved seeing the UG represented. I really liked that the SDCC Class Photo was in there too. I liked seeing the fan pictures in the credits. I saw Fermentis, Rusvan and Wayco in there. GPKCustoms (James) interview was good. Glad you beat cancer my friend. The BADI thought the GPK movie stuff should have been cut WAY down. I'm talking like, maybe 2 minutes of GPK movie material. I thought they went a little overboard getting so many of the actors. The movie is terrible and is really just a small thing that happened toward the tail end of GPK popularity. The UGLYThe sound. Not a fan of the sound in the movie. There were many times where the lips were out of sync with the voice. I thought the background music was too loud and would drown out the interviews at times. A lot of the songs were just not good. There were a few instances of unfocused camera work and questionable editing. Nothing major. The MISSINGI would have liked to see more stuff about the hardcore fan. We had a few things in there but there was some cool stuff missing. Fan Sets, Parody CD, custom cheap toys, Youtube videos, Melty Misfits, etc. I wish they would have put in some sales data for the old and new kids. I wish LD was one of the people interviewed. He and Pound were the pinnacle of ANS. I would have also liked to hear why Pound retired from GPK. OVERALLI'm giving the film 3/5 stars. I think the movie is good. I'll probably watch it again in the future. I'm going to watch some of the bonus features soon. I knew going into this that the film was extremely low budget and was ultimately completed through passion for the brand. I appreciate everything that went into this. Great job guys.

Great review , i would have given it a 3.5 so i voted 3. Agree with way too much time spent on the gpk movie!, though this deaf old man didn't mind the sound or music. I saw many collections i recognized Geoff, Chris K, Rahul, Wayco and more. I was super excited to see they used a pic with me and my little dude!

I said 4/5. I thought it was really well done and interesting. John Pound was very endearing and likeable to me, and a great interview I thought. I loved all the notes, concept art, and lawsuit stuff. I really enjoyed Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman's parts too. All of the interviews were interesting though. I wasn't as into the movie stuff, but I know it has its fans. Great job!

No one else even came close with their ideas. Great job with Mark and Art to recognize that and move forward with him.

I gave it a 4/5. I loved all the info in the film. I agree, the sound could have been better. I wish they had talked more about the sketch card inserts, but maybe I am a bit biased.

I thought it was funny/sad how bummed Pound was that they weren't going to be as cute with the post-lawsuit look.

I thought it was funny/sad how bummed Pound was that they weren't going to be as cute with the post-lawsuit look. Haha, yeah. I'm right there with him on that. Although, he did a great job with 10-15 in making them cute. Glad he was so passionate about the kids.

I'm glad you said something, I thought they spent way too much time on the movie as well. Would have preferred a little more time for the new generation of artists and hardcore collector's collections than that. Did you get your photo included in the end credits Cory? I was happy to see some of Luis Diaz pieces on there as well as some buddies in the end credits. I will rate it a three. Haven't watched special features yet. I do need a Brent promo card if anyone has an extra.

I could have done better, but just didn't care that much. I think I submitted it very late in the process too. I watched the John Pound video bonus material. I think I'll listen to the audio stuff in my car since I have a DVD system that I can play through the speakers.

There were many times where the lips were out of sync with the voice. I thought the background music was too loud and would drown out the interviews at times. +1 : the sound level of background music is a real pain. It makes the interviews difficult to hear sometimes, I had to prick up my ears during the all documentary. I also agree with Cory about the movie stuff : a few minutes would have been enough. Otherwise, I really had good time listening to the artists, the interviews are definitely a strong point. As an alt comix fan, I enjoyed the fact that the interviews of Spiegelman, Pound and Bunk (I'm thinking about the visit of his studio in the bonus) are partially dedicated to their work as comics artists. The original score by DR CHUD is pretty fun. Overall, the documentary is definitely well worth the wait. Thanks a lot to the team of passionate people involved in this project ! [ dreamer mode on] And, as I said elsewhere, I'd love to see a second episode dedicated to foreign releases that would not be a long list of rare items but an analysis of the phenomenon in the other countries. There are so much aspects I would love to hear : - there are a lot of things to say about the French release ( garbagepailkids.proboards.com/thread/14463/history-crados-cousteau-politics-influences) - how the cards were used in different countries... for instance, Game8 told me that in Netherlands, kids were throwing cards against walls : I use to play that game when i was a kid. You would trow the cards against the wall from 10m or so and when the card would fall on top of another card you would win the game and the cards on the ground. Thats why so many uk cards have corner damage here- would definitely love to learn more about some other releases (european, south american, israeli...) - a real investigation about "test sets" and Bukimi Kun would also be awesome [ dreamer mode off]

i gave it a 4/5.
so many things i loved about the movie...
the documentary gave me a new appreciation for the gpk movie, but i do agree the movie footage was a bit(way) much...great for those who love the gpk movie though.
the only other minor flaw i noticed was the music was a bit too loud when bunk and a couple others were talking. super nitpicking, i know...but i was straining to hear some interviews over the music. EDIT: just saw Cory already made mention of the sound
overall i found the movie was super comprehensive. LOVED the interviews and extras.
my favorite parts of the whole thing were getting to see and hear the personalities of the artists and contributors...both new and old. pound is such a great and authentic dude...so glad to hear that he wasn't totally hurt by not getting to have the art back from topps. what a great insight into the man and his take on the history...awesome to also see him being silly at times. Cool to hear the way that bunk sees art and the world, loved his interview and checking out his house/museum! and also great to see new artists and put the personalities with the pictures...love the bits with mark, brent, and even buffmonster had some really awesome stuff to say!! interesting to hear the artists perspectives on gpk as a whole and get a small insight into the personalities.
of course some of the best parts were talking about the art and the collectors...great stories and awesome to see you dudes on there. saw geoff, billo, cmk, casiokid, simon, wayco and some others too but i watch about a week ago and forget a lot of it.
also completely agree, was SUPER cool to see the ug on there haha.
overall doc was a lot of fun and i learned quite a few things. hats off to the makers of the film

I'm the first to give it a 5/5, here's why: for a low budget documentary it's near perfect. Plus, I saw a lot of my friends on screen, and the ones I didn't see I felt their souls. It was so much better than I thought it would be, the artists interviews are some of the most valuable video content I've seen in a long time (please ignore if Cory rags me for seeing Ghostbusters 3 recently, lol). Seeing Pound was like meeting a soul brother you didn't know you had. How awesome was Art -he was the king of the documentary! We are lucky to have such a talent connected with GPK. Jay was great, Jay is always great, seeing him on film gave me a warm feeling. Mark N is great, love Mark, SO funny! All these guys, everything I loved!
I liked the movie section, it was proportionally long, but those guys have a ton of stories and personality, they are living Garbage Pail Kids, as we all are!
Learned a lot, for one never had seen the artwork of the brick in the stained glass, omg, I want that!!! Is that a Pound??? Also, how Bunks style influenced Pounds!!! Like, how Pound rethought his style after seeing Bunks details! The lawsuit stuff was fascinating! Also, getting to know Len Brown, who I knew of but never understood his place in GPK's development. Brent has a nice Cheap Toy collection. The whole conceptual lead-in to GPKs made sense! There was something humbling and honest about what Ping said about how he tries to match Pound's style and doesn't focus on trying to be different. Yet, Zapata talked about how each artist (Ping included!!) has their own humor that shows through in how they frame a scene! Funny to hear that Jay had both a CPK job and a GPK job! And, did Pound work out of his living room, like from the part where he said he did 500 GPK paintings 'right there' and it looked like he was talking about a small area of his living room?
The bad -Cheap Toys not mentioned. Little to no video footage of collectors collections! The sound was ill-aligned with the speakers. No Diaz. And, no Cheap Toys, oh did I say that already? All the bad was minor, and the audio is somewhat charming, and I really didn't notice it, or at least got bothered with it, until some of the later parts with Mark N and Jay.
I found Jay's statement in the final moment of the movie breathtaking. The editor(s) was genius for closing the documentary on that note, it was sobering, but gave the movie a late dash of gravitas.
5/5, Underground Documentary Classic, must-see for any child of the 80's, regardless if you are obsessed with Garbage Pail Kids or not.

So I rated this 4/5 stars. Overall, I loved it.
I really enjoyed all the artist interviews. They did a really good job of giving the history of GPK and explaining what was going on at the time. Loved all the artist/creators interviews. I also enjoyed hearing from the new artists and crew at Topps.
I thought the sound was bad at parts. I also agree that they spent way too much time on the GPK movie.
Other than that, it was great and I really appreciate all the effort that everyone put into making this movie.

4/5, agreed on the sound and time spent on the movie relative to collectors pics. I enjoyed hearing it all, but I would trade some for more collector pics/stories. Or hey....just make it Peter Jackson long and add another hour of slideshow collectors pics.
Fantastic job for the low budget. Nitpicking the few little things here but overall I loved it and have watched it twice already. The interviews were fascinating. Those guys get mad respect for churning out great stuff set after set.
