I dont know where this should go so I'm putting it in feedback.
I am furious with USPS right now. A guy bought one of my cards on eBay - Chrome 2 Cheeky Charles black refractor 01/99.
He got his card today only to find the packaging beat all to hell. He sent me pics and it looks like it was used as a damn boxing bag. Anyway, the card is scratched all to hell. It was in a penny sleeve and a top loader. It actually came out of the loader. I have shipped approximately 15 chrome refractors in the same packaging - with NO issues or complaints from buyers. Besides - I have found the chrome 2 refractors to be a tight fit into top loaders - I'm always careful as a neurosurgeon when I put them into their protection.
Anyway, I issued a full refund to the buyer and have initiated a claim with USPS.
What really sucks is that this dude is probably one of the coolest GPK people I've talked/dealt with - and he really wanted this card - he was even going to send it to PSA being that it was 01/99.
This just sucks.

That sucks man. I have had about 95% luck with USPS but every once in a while they really mess up. I've sent a card in a top loader inside a photo-mailer to somebody and the mailman literally bent the photo-mailer and top loader in half to fit in the person's mailbox.
It sounds like you had insurance which is a good thing. I've never had to make an insurance claim with USPS so let us know how it turns out.

USPS is brutal at times. With top loaders, also make sure the card is unable to slip out and place between several layers of cardboard. With any service on high $, I always assume the worst and use boxes vs just bubble envelopes. Sorry you got the shaft and must waste your time. Over the years, the USPS has cut back hours, benefits and is basically unionized. Some bad apples ruin it for the rest and not like a real business. When I go into the PO, it feels like going into the welfare office. People getting almost free money orders, unprepared and unhappy workers.

ALWAYS put a piece of tape of some kind over the top loader. cards in plastic have little friction holding them in and tend to slip out from what Ive found.

Painters tape is the best. It doesn't leave any residue on the toploader or card.

USPS can be reckless. My personal packing rules...
1. Penny sleeve, top-loader, masking tape 2. Team bag 3. Sandwich between cardboard, foamboard, decoys, or a bunch of commons 4. Zoplock bag (to protect from moisture) 5. Bubble mailer (or box with peanuts for higher priced items)
I know its overkill, but I've never had any problems and most of the stuff is recycled so there isn't much cost on my end.

UPS is by far the worst and FedEx Express (NOT Ground) by far the best. I always make sure USPS packages are scanned into the system.
Knock on wood, USPS is fantastic cost / benefit and delivers on SAT for free. I usually self insure under $500 and it has worked out well.
