I am thrilled that GPK lives, I get to share and relive a childhood memory with my kids. I second this part! I still can't resist picking up a bit at retail and building my own base set. My 4 year, almost 5 year old daughter, LOVES them. She doesn't always get the humor, but will look at them over and over like I used to. When she found out there were puzzles on the back she was elated! We spent a good amount of time yesterday and the day before making the puzzles together. That's the great thing about this hobby, there are many ways to collect it. Sometimes it's hard to change our approach, especially if we feel it's forced on us. For me, it was getting back to the basics. My enjoyment has increased exponentially. I'm glad that new GPK sets still come out so I can buy some packs with my duaghter and share that experience. It wouldn't be the same just pulling out some old cards, I doubt she'd be as interested. It's more about seeing her eyes light up when she sees the packs on the shelf in the store and telling her she can get a couple packs.

As for the art, it's not art intended for my dream, it's for Topps dream. I can't for the life of me see how we should expect Topps to make something for us individually. In fact, since I think I've been here long enough to notice. We don't all agree on what a set SHOULD look like, we all have different character favorites, different series favorites, and different favorite artists. Why and how do you expect topps to cater to each individual? I agree with this 100%. Even topps has said they are catering to like 6 different groups with each series. I figure if I like 40-60%, its a really good set. For BNS2, I am more in the 60%+ range. Its a really nice set and I am loving the glow in the dark cards as well as the 120+ numbered cards. I think they did a good job there without exploiting adam bomb through whatever. Are there cards I do not like? Yep. There are concepts I hate but I realize there is an audience that prefers those ones. Overall I think topps is moving in a good direction with GPK and the BNS series. As far as the parallels go. I could care less about them. But some really like the hunt for them and its cool to have a chance for something rare in your packs. This is no different the contests that baseball/football card companies ran in the 80s. I actually won a trip to the super bowl from proset when I was like 7 yrs old. I was too young to go but still have the ticket and stuff.

I have to say, I love GPK, I love OS I love FB, and I love BNS. ANS not so much simply because I wasn't involved. I still collect it though. I am a completist, and as such I need to finish the project. Is it ridiculous, yes, but I enjoy the hunt. In fact I enjoy the hunt as much and maybe more than the finished goal. Does that make it bad? I don't think so, and that's what matters to me. As for the art, it's not art intended for my dream, it's for Topps dream. They could care less who drew what, they just like the funny cards and something about it draws them in. I give big props to the GPK franchise as it has survived. Do I hate parallels, not really. I'd be bored with the set if it was complete in 1 hobby box, no hunting required. Oh and for the record, parallels drive the GPK economy. Without parallels no box breakers would exist and distribution would suffer. GPK as a franchise would die. In today's economy it's distribution and volume, you need to sell more and reach more to make the same dollar that 1% of the effort did 25 years ago. Competition is fierce, not just between manufacturers, but between brands within Topps. I love GPK, I think it's absurd to be a completist with this many parallels etc, but it's my choice and no one is forcing me. In the future, I will likely slow down as the kids get older, hoping that one day they can enjoy the GPK phenomenon with their kids. So I will now open my case that just arrived from Potomac, no matter what's inside we will have fun doing it! Well said Keir!

I believe Topps is trying to cater a lot of people at the same time. Not everyone will be completely satisfied with this or any future release. That is impossible to do. Topps is trying to establish middle ground between the old fans and new comers. Parallels are there to keep interest and fuel the GPK economy. Topps has to make their money in order to keep the brand alive. Parallels is their way. You aren't forced to make a set of parallels. You can just go for the base set and be done without breaking the bank. Just be happy GPK is still alive. Have fun and don't worry or stress about it. Enjoy it while you can and don't nit pick over and go nuts. You'll be better off this way instead of being grumpy you can't have it your way.

Just to be accepting of whatever they put out because "they can't please everyone" or "it's a product for children" are some of things that are killing GPK for me. Do I expect them to cater to me individually? Hell no. However, I do expect quality. I didn't like every card in the sets back in the day but almost all of the cards were high quality. Nowadays we are lucky to get a few great ones surrounded by a bunch of abysmal artwork and/or rehashed concepts. There is no motherfuggin reason a card like Egg Sheldon should exist. It's lazy, it's insulting, it's bulls**t.
Last I remember, GPK was a kids product in the 80's. Why do we think kids are so fuggin stupid now? Everything needs to be dumbed down to levels where it's not compelling to anyone...including kids. If GPK were ANS or BNS in the 80's nobody would remember GPK today. It's the reason why all the GPK knock-offs didn't take. They sucked and kids rejected them. Hell, they rejected GPK when the quality diminished.
Anyway, I can't support that BS Topps mentality anymore. If you can get enjoyment out of these cards then more power to you. I'm happy the brand lives on, but I hate what they have been morphed into.

I think my favorite part of collecting was seeking out and discovering "new", foreign GPK releases... working with some other collectors on these discoveries was also part of the fun (especially sharing stories about phone call conversations we had with people overseas). Ha! Ha! 3am international calls to Finland.... -TCT

I just realized, since i haven't bought any bns2 yet, that there are now "c" cards as well. Jesus, talk about overkill topps. Insanity. Good luck to keirmon and other gold collectors on that. I'd rather save the 15k to buy a new car. "C" Cards, eh? They are really a creative bunch over there. The minions must subscribe to my newsletters.

That must of been over a year ago and then I carried that over with my "c" cards to the self produced sets and then someone decides to threaten to sue me? I don't know the full story behind this, but it sounds truly f*cked up. Btw, your art is unparalleled, Luis. Wish you were more involved in the making of the commercial sets.

I must have posted and not previewed a pre-edited post. I hope to never do any more commercialized work from now til I die. I'm a homegrown sort of guy. I almost stopped after Sweaty Betty if it wasn't for a good friend of mine that told me to continue, but I'm just not made to work underneath anyone. Deadlines are motivators for some, but it's always been a hinderer of artistry for me. I'm the turtle in this story.

However, the more days that go by the better I feel about my decision and the more I am enjoying the hobby. I never thought I would say that.

Ha! Ha! 3am international calls to Finland.... -TCT When the person picked up, I thought I was speaking with someone from Mars. But, that wasn't the only funny thing that happend when calling around for GPK... there were plenty of stories from calling over to Australia, NZ, and the UK. That's some hardcore collecting. I guess that's one of the reasons I never got into the foreign stuff. Too much work.

Yikes! That is a lot on BNS 1 alone. Still, I spent about roughly $1K. I managed to complete all base: Green X2, Silver X2 and Black X1 sets, Bonus X2 sets, 2 base Golds, Locos X3, Mix N Match X2, Green ABTH X2, Silver ABTH X3 sets and Poster X2. Also got a printing plate I bought when I sold that gold ABTH I pulled that helped paid for it. Finally got 2 hobby boxes, 1 retail, 2 retail 16 packs boxes, 7 bonus boxes - all these factory sealed. I think that is all the main good stuff I got. I do have a bit of extras of parallels and base. I made 4 base sets and carefully cherry picked the best cards from the case I bought. Oh and probably a dozen base ABTH. I think I faired well. Back in the day, original series boxes sold for $12 plus tax... great value for a great product. I remember, thing was at 7 years old 12 bucks was like 2 weeks of lawn mowing. Id get 3 bucks and get 8 packs & a candy bar, lol.

All good points, yea, this round, I have definitely learned how to value engineer my sets. My max now will be 5 hobby boxes to build some cards up for trade, I'm only after the base, black, 3D & Glow in Dark sets. Whatever else I get is a bonus to me. The bonus cards are a far cry, gold & silver are just pocket eaters. If I can trade out & put a silver set together great if not don't care much. I have my sketch already from the first box so I'm looking good so far, Ive spent less than $120 so far and have 3 base sets & almost all 3D & glows. Now I just want to complete black & I'm good. Ill still get the kids a few packs at target but that's just for Sh!ts & giggles.

Russ you better not! Russ you better not! I'm serious, I need to do it for my health on so many levels, I haven't been 'well' for a long time, and my collecting game is off, I want to get out while I'm on top. My friends will always be friends and the collection will stay in tact, as upsetting as this decision is and as painful this process will be, one day soon I can get good sleep again, first time in six years. I take things too far, I need an intervention, it's about 3 years overdue.

I'll be around, after a long break, no promises though. If I come back it will because I want to, I don't owe anybody s**t, I've paid my dues a million times over, have over 8,000 posts between here and CTL, and over 1500 ebay feedback score, and I'm tired. I don't even like computers to be honest, I only come here to be with you guys and see cool s**t, but the money and time crippled me.

Break up the worlds largest cheapy collection Shawty is trying to get under shawty's skin. Two things will not change: friends and the cheap toys(and candy items). Yet, I don't want to say never, that's exactly what's hurting me, I'm not obligated or accountable to anyone or any cause or any collectible anymore. I just want to be a fan again, I want to care because I care, not because I'm supposed to care. I can't support anymore-my back is broke. If the structure falls, then so be it, it was going to eventually. I'm not having the fun with collecting I used to have. There's no plans for a Cheap Toy Museum (like, 30 people might visit it once a year and 20 of those by accident), I'm just a dude with a badass collection his my attic.
