I was talking with I guy from Craigslist last year and he had the small uk cards and he said he bought them here in the US when he was a kid in California. Don't know how true it is but that's what he said. Maybe card stores were able to obtain them to sell over here. Who knows.

I wanted to buy a box on ebay, just missed it. The seller said that the black stripe was probably because it didn't sell in the UK and got shipped to the US. The price in Holland was also 25ct. but i think it's 25 $ cent. Though not sure Kalas.. Als het NL is zou het 25ct zijn toch?

They were sold here in the US. When I rediscovered my collection the only series 1 cards I had were UK's.
They were probably sent back to topps Ireland to begin with but since gpk's were still going strong here in the states they probably sent them over here to the US to sell.

That would explain the surplus of UK series 1 boxes over there in the states. I rarely see any UK sellers selling them on ebay. They mostly come from stateside. I remember a few years ago there being cases of OS 1 boxes being sold on ebay so there are a fair few out there. I don't know if they really justify their price because of that. I'm guessing that Topps Ireland ran off a massive amount of them off the back of sales of US OS 1 and 2 which is why its the most common UK box.
This is one of the theories I have as to why the later UK series mixed OS 3,4 and 5 in the same release. Topps Ireland probably would've been under pressure to play catch up almost, with the states. As a result OS 1 in the UK was pulled from the shelves to release OS 2 which had a really good run. Then OS 3 came out, then 4, then 5 all within a few short months. There was clearly some pressure there to include GPK's from the later series in the early UK releases, not only for promotional purposes, but also guaranteeing further sales by only including the A's of one card in series 3 and the B's of the same card in series 4,5 and 6. Weird strategy - but I collected the later series to get the B's so it worked.

Yeah I also remember when I was younger buying them. Also there was a seller back in early 2000 "gumby96", that had cases of them! A cases, b cases, & A /B cases, he sold them for quite some time.
I'm sure all the old schools gpk collectors remember him.
Oh well. Just my input.

Probably ended up selling them in the US as a kind of parallel import to shift some excess stock... or some other company bought a load of excess from Topps Ireland and sold them in the US... I remember some places were selling ANS US in the UK in small amounts privately in small comic book stores and the like.

Thanx for all the reply's! But its also something weird about this box i posted the black "return" mark is set over the 25c sticker ...
So that means these boxes where restocked from the UK and then shipped to the USA and later returned in the USA?

So that means these boxes where restocked from the UK and then and then later returned in the USA? If it says 'Topps Ireland' on it then that must be the case... whether Topps sold them off itself or via a clearance broker. Once they produce loads of quantity, storage is an issue after demand dips.

I know for a fact the UK series ones were sold in the US. I have a box of unopened packs and many opened packs. I bought these when i was very young from Big Lots its like a discount clearance store here in the US. I was so excited they were .10 a pack and these were the only first series i ever owned.

Interesting thread. It doesnt surprise me that they sold UK packs in the US. Far bigger market, English speaking, saves on waste. But it doesn't reflect in the value of OS1, which should thus be lower than 2 and 3 at least... The OS1 values are as strong as ever. The probable reason for no longer producing UK variants domestically is that anyone who really wants them can just get them on Ebay from the US, thus there is no need for a UK production facility any more. This all surprises me, as I thought that the usual method of recycling things in the 80s was to dump them at sea.

They definitely sold UK OS1 here in the US. I remember buying them from at least 2 stores in my small town 1987-1989 era.... I still have them along with my old cards. I remember they weren't very popular with the other kids because they were so small and only came 3 cards per pack.

Just imagine how we felt when you had to spend time with your tight auntie in the summer and shed buy you one pack grrrr bad times. My dad used to buy me like 7 packs at a time

I purchased handfuls of these packs at a card show in baltimore back in 1997. They seemed to be plentiful in the US. They were 5 for $1.

I just noticed you are from NC also kevsmif80. Are you same guy I met in Greensboro 3-4 years ago that sold me a U.K. set? We talked about buying GPK for dirt cheap at Big Lots back in the day. I bought OS4/OS5 packs for 5 cents each and you mentioned buying UK packs at Big Lots also for super cheap. 10 cents a UK1 pack is a steal! Small world if it's you! 😀
