The amount of interests I have in my life are endless and have no relation to each other. I will ALWAYS be in and out of GPK. I was out of them for the last 5 years... I was into GPK in 1985 and stopped around 1988 then cared again in 1991, then again in 1999. Bought all of them OS1-15 in 2004.
I was all gun ho when ANS1 came out. Then.... came ANS2
From then on I was just collecting them just too have them. Never really got back into it. Until the Flashbacks that is. Somehow even though I'm buying the same cards I already have, I have a new found interest.

i stopped during OS 7 when our neighborhood pharmacy stopped carrying them. by then, everyone around my town stopped collecting as well. i rediscovered them in 2001 on ebay, but my concert addiction overruled. then i got excited when i saw ANS1 at target and bought a bunch, but never completed the base set, so in a box they went. i got back into it when my son's mother found them in said box, and began finishing the ANS as they came out and slowly aquiring OS sets. now i constantly search stores for the newest series, much to my girlfriend's dismay. she doesn't understand, but it's almost an obsession for me now. a piece of my almost forgotten childhood....

I fell out when I saw series 10 in stores. The new non-cabbage patch art style killed GPK for me at lightspeed.

I've gotten out of them and back into them twice. The reason for getting out of them was they just started to disappear plus the interest wasn't there like it was in the beginning. Both times I got back into them was mainly nostalgia, and just kind of missed collecting them. Now I'm back on fully addicted again. Now that I'm older have more money I find it's easy to collect them now than it was as a kid for mainly the money reason. Mike

I first bought a couple packs of 6th series from the gas station after stealing a small stack from some poor girl in my class. So then i had a little collection and was hooked. I remember going to the gas station like the very next day and the whole damn 6th series box being gone. I was crushed. I ask the old man behind the counter would he get more he told me yes. The next time i went in there was a half empty box of 7th series. Were was the bright red 6th series packs? I bought as many as i could every chance i got all the way to the day i got 5 dollars worth of the 9th series and my mom finally took my huge stack with old dirty rubber bands around it and seen what i was spending my money on. That was the day my collecting ended. Or did it? The very next time we went to the drug store i grabbed as many 10th series packs that my little hands would hold think a few hit the floor and STOLE THEM! when we got home i went to my clubhouse and opend every pack and chewed every stick of gum. Ahhh i had won! Well it was kind of hard to hide so she busted me with the "trash" again so every time we went to the store i had to hold her hand or sit in the car. I remember the last pack i ever bought was a 14th with a 50cent sticker over the 25cent logo. Never seen them again till ebay and we all know that same old story.

Oh and one other little thing as far as nes getting me out. My grandmother got me Ghost and Goblins for the nes for Christmas which was like 50$ back then and i traded it to the kid next door for all his garbage pail kids which was series 1 through 5. My grandmother found out and told his parents that made him trade back. Great grandma i think Ghost and Goblins is worth like 3 bucks today

I have not been into GPK's since OS 10. I got out of them for the same reason as most; I grew up and Nintendo and friends became priority. My wife and I are moving and we've been packing the last few weeks and I ran across my old cards that were packed safely in a chest. Started going through them and just like that i'm back in it and obsessed!
I started collecting back when series 2 came out and got out during 10. I'm going to try to go back and try to finish the OS sets and MAYBE work on the newer stuff. It was always a dream to have a complete 1st series but back then the local card store always wanted over $100 for the set, when they had one. I see it's worth a bit more now, lol.
I've already got quite a pile of FB3 cards since we frequent Target and it's the perfect excuse to pick some up. Funny thing is, I thought the whole parallel thing was such a joke and who would spend money just to have the same card in different colors but now I find myself saddly wanting them too. Guess that's why I say i'm obsessed.
I don't know how long it will last this time but at least I will be able to add to the collection some more.

For me it was a couple things that took over my interests. Nintendo was the biggest one. I was already playing Atari but Nintendo took over my life. It was like I had wall eye vision and couldn't see anything else going on in the world. I also got into buying sports cards when I realized certain cards could actually be worth money. Little did I know that GPK's would be worth quite a lot in the future. But who would've?

It was a combination of the main three things others have already mentioned. The artwork started getting bad resulting from the Cabbage Patch Kids lawsuit (Series 10 and up), the corner stores and gas stations stopped carrying them and me moving on to other interests. It's funny but the original run of buying and collecting GPK was only about a couple of years, yet it feels like it was around a lot longer. The way we experience time as kids is really different than how we now, as adults, experience it.
It was mostly a team effort between me, my sister and my younger brother in acquiring and collecting GPK, but I was the one that was really obsessed with the cards and by that virtue was the de facto collector. I had a couple of cousins (one from my mother's side and one from my father's side) live on the same street and they soon started their collections. In elementary school we were close and GPK strengthened that bond, but I guess going into middle school it wasn't cool to hang out too much with your siblings and that coincided with the waning of GPK. (I do remember years later when I first got a set of Meanie Babies and showing them to my sister and her 5 year old son. My nephew didn't care too much for them but my sister did say they were bad-ass as they were just as awesome as GPK.)
By that time I was really into BMX and freestyling and that usually took up a lot of my time. (That and pro wrestling. WWF & NWA when it was a great time to be a fan as a kid.) We started with cheap Huffy's and Murray's but soon graduated to GT's and Dyno's. The bigger thing from friends at school were skateboarding but that didn't really interest me. From there was when I was introduced to Punk and Hardcore, buying LPs and EPs. To this day, the bulk of my hobby money goes to records.
I've never forgotten Garbage Pail Kids, even though I lost all my cards as a kid. Once in high school I seen some skater dork with what appeared to be GPK stickers on his folder. It was really those f**ked Up Blind Kids stickers from some skateboard company, but I did want those. Years later I was able to get all the GPK original series from Ebay. This was before prices skyrocketed. I was originally just going to stop at Series Nine because of the later artwork, but that soon changed. Then I came across All New Series 2 when I wandered in a comic book shop. It must have been the artwork or price that turned me off from buying some packs. I thought the second incarnation of GPK was going to be short-lived, but amazingly it's been over 10 years now and with Brand New Series it looks like it will continue to go strong. I am now trying to finish completing at least a base set of the ANS and Flashbacks Series as I completely ignored all those. Brand New Series is what got me back in as a collector.

Tbh I bought 3 packs of fb1 hated them and lost interest. I grew up with ANS. so I don't know any of the old characters or have any OS sets. So I recently just started collecting again to complete my ans sets. Just need a few more to finish.

What happened to me is that I couldn't find any more stores that sell GPK after Series 10.
I later stumbled onto a shop selling Series 13 and was pretty upset that I had missed out on so much. I bought the rest of the packs and went on a crusade to find 11/12 packs. I still don't have complete sets of 11/12/13/14 because of it.
Once I had my full sets of 15, I never saw them again until BNS2... and I'm playing catchup again, only it's way more expensive now lol
Glad to be back!

During ANS I dropped out of collecting because I bought a case of ANS6 and made a master set after only like 3 boxes.
There were no sketch cards like ANS4, and no real reason to go through the rest of my boxes. That's why I buy so many, for the excitement of filling a set, or getting the rare card.
When ANS7 was announced, and didn't have any sketch cards or rare inserts, I decided to just buy a master set on eBay.
By the time the FB sets came around, I saw that they were just reprinted crap I already had mostly, and I'd started to have a lot more real life obligations that didn't provide me the same disposable income that I had during ANS, so I fell out of the hobby with all my stuff sitting in boxes waiting for me to re-re-re-discover the hobby yet again with BNS.
Oh, and I really really HATE the crossword puzzle borders on FB. Horrible design idea, so ugly and distracting.
I still can't afford what I could back in the ANS days, but I'm still having fun.

I have been off and on with GPK since the OS, but came back strong in 2001/2002. After the FB debacle I slowed down quite a bit but now since the brand has become extremely money hungry I am about to quit for good. If BNS3 is a bust and Chrome 2 sucks as bad as Chrome 1 with all of the nonsense chase cards and extremely high pack prices, I will be turning my back for good like a lot of other long time passionate collectors.
