Back in the day when we were kids and first laid eyes on GPK everything was unexplored territory. Do you remember looking through your first stack of cards? Did a specific card stick out to you, which propelled you into being a GPK fanatic? Or did you see a GPK randomly placed somewhere and it was so awesome that you couldn't live without them? What character was it?  |

SIMPLE...DEAD TED
I still remember sitting on Corrine Hankins (  ) front yard when her friend came over with some cards. I had no idea what GPK was...but once I saw Dead Ted I knew I wanted some. The artwork was creepy and unlike anything I had seen before.
Plus - I knew my mom would hate it so it made it all the more sweeeeeeeet!
It actually took quite a while for me to get my hands on ANY OS1 cards...and even longer until I got Dead Ted...but the journey was worth it!! |

THE TWO I REMEMBER MOST WERE FORMALDE HEIDI & TIFFANY LAMP. I THINK I STARTED GETTING GPK CARDS WHEN SERIES 2 CAME OUT BUT THE THOSE 2 SERIES 4 CARDS STICK OUT IN MY MIND.

So many bring back memories everytime i sit there and flick through my collection, you see a certain card and its as if your back in 1985 ect. I can't remember the exact card/cards that i first had but 1 i do remember vividly is New Wave Dave :yes:  Me and my best mate at the time really loved this card, i think it was because the card represented some kind of badboy or rebel with the graffiti lol I remember when we used to ride around our close we had GPK number plates on our bikes and we both always wanted to pretend to be New Wave Dave lol and when the movie came out we were devistarted he wasn't in it  |

For me it was the ENTIRE OS4 series by far. Though most consider OS4 to be one of the weaker OS series, it is indeed my favourite!
My uncle took me to trade day once and this dude was selling several GPK OS4 unopened boxes. So he bought me one (the gum was still good too!). I remember sitting in the floor at my grandmothers house opening each and ever pack. Man, it was so cool to see that many GPK that were all yours! So many of them.Dail Snail, Baked Jake, Crystal Gale, Rudy Toot and Sloshed Josh were among my favourites. I took them all to school when i was in second grade and asked the teacher for permission to hand them out. I only gave out the B cards cuz i considered them second rate then. So in the end i ended up with a OS4 box full of A cards.
Come 2004 i start digging around in my closet looking for these cards cuz i knew i had them, and knew they didn't get thrown away. When i finally found them it was just a handful but i got that nostalgia all over again. This was the at the very very beginning of my current GPK collecting career and i was OBSESSED!! After finding those in my closet , the very next day i went to the mall and there was a little card vendor temporarily set up in the middle. He had quite a few GPK items that i ended up purchasing.... but there.... by itself.... was a complete OS4 with all variations. So i found those few cards the night before after completely forgetting about them, and then there is the entire series the next day right before my eyes! It was just too much to be coincidence. I was meant to collect GPK!

I was hooked before I even saw my first card. I was at a store one day and happened to see this:  I was glued to it at the store. I think my mom was at the store to buy a lottery ticket or some s**t. I remember asking if I could have a pack and claiming that it was only 25 cents. Of course she said no, but a few days later I actually ran into the cards at school and I needed to get some and I needed them quick. I was able to get some OS3 cards but my big scores came when I got an almost full box of OS4 then a few months later me and a friend of mine split a box of OS5. After that it was a few packs here and there. I adored OS6. That huge Dyna Mike puzzle was awesome. During the OS3 and OS4 days I remember spending my summer at the babysitters outside with my GPK. I'd go under a tree and just study the greatness of every character and trade with the other kids.  |

Drippy Dan. I love how he looks like a statue, with proper posture and all. I was like "Wow, this guy is seriously hurt... and he's proud of it." To this day, Drippy Dan is my favorite OS1 GPK. He wasn't mine, mind you, but I loved him all the same. That was the cool thing about hanging out with older kids (I'm one of the youngsters here, so when OS1 came out, I was too young to remember it): I got to see the GPKs I was too young to get my hands on for a few more years.

I only remember collecting OS3 and OS4 so I must have got out of the GPK phase unfortunately. I remember trading with some kid at school and he gave me my only OS2 which was Spacey Stacey which I thought was just the coolest card. |

Once upon a time... in a galaxy far away... and the Kids lived crappily ever after.
Let's see... I believe I'm the oldest GPK collector. Though I started collecting GPK during OS2, I was in the 7th grade when Jr High/Middle School started. In Fall of '85 was on the long bus ride home and sitting close to this kid Stuart who lived about a block down from me in the neighborhood. I remember him getting bullied a lot and being this scrawny little kid in karate (yellow-tip)... he was in 5th grade. At any rate, he was sitting by me and going through some cards on the bus... I was looking at these amazing sweet-ass cards... one with a girl stuck in ice, another crawling out of a grave, another with Stuart's name running all crazy with weapons... I was all giddy with this crazy happiness, I had never seen something so cool in my life.
My twin brother and I pleaded with our Mom to take us to ToysRUs where Stuart said he got the cards/stickers... at that time, it took freakin' forever to save up allowance... we usually spent it on candy/gum. So we had $8 and a box at the time cost roughly $12... so we each bought a 3/4 box and I remember after trading, I was able to complete the whole set except for "Matt ratt". But I was confused, because they were not the cards my new best friend had... so I told him about the new release and he tried his hardest to get me 1st singles from his friends at karate... I was able to get 25 of those bad boys and relished them until eBay circa 1998 when I was finally able to get a box of 1st, opening 1st packs, and finishing that damn set. But that's a future story.
Back on the bus the next week... I find out that I had the 2nd print run of the OS2, because this other kid's stack of OS2 had the "leaky Linsday" backs... I was like, WTF??? The only thing I was able to collect for that was the actual puzzle, and one of the pieces had a punch hole in it because this other kid hung them all in his room from his ceiling! Stuart used to play pick-up-cards with his outside... he'd throw them in the air and numerically put them back together in the yard. LOL. Since my older brother collected baseball cards and was anal about his cards, I knew you had to properly place them in plastic sheets!
At any rate... that's how I got hooked on the cards. I remember every store I bought each series in... how much they were going for... and just that excitement to see a new color wrapper/box for a new series... Stu and I collected all 15 series together, trying to buy the later series boxes together and opening them so we could trade and go over the cool images and hopefully come across our first names. We also were crazy about GIJoe and Transformers, but nothing compared to GPK. I'll get to the "80's GPK DRAMA" post now...

Back around series 10, one card that stuck out for me was Facey Tracie.
Not really that great a character/card but that was the series that first got me into collecting the cards.

This post is fading... noooooooooooo... it's a good one. More GPK peeps need to post what got'em hooked.
For some reason, I really like "PATTY putty - Muggin' MEGAN"... with that blue background. That card really pulled me in. Similar to "JOE blow - ROD Wad" with the 3rd series and yellow background... simple but perfect. I wish they'd come out with a ANS that had a nostalgic 1st series feel to it.

If ever there was a topic to rehash this is definitely one of them, I totally agree with Aaron that more people should post what gpk got them hooked - it's just cool to know what others thought back then compared to what I thought when I first got hooked.......or something like that......
Anyway, there were a few gpk that just absolutely mesmerized me back when I was 8 years old in 1985. A few that I remember in particular were "soft boiled sam", "ashcan andy", "mixed-up mitch" and "janet planet" believe it or not. For whatever reason those 4 really stand out in my memory and those particular names.....just the images and colors were so incredibly cool to look at....the first card that made me actually cringe was "Hy Gene" which is probably my favorite gpk of all time.....I remember my dad hated the "drunk ken" card - his name is Ken. "Art gallery" also sticks out in my mind from back then. Just a few others that stick out: the blue background on the "nasty nick" card with the white dracula face, "marty gras" with the facial stubble hair, the black and purple background on "live mike", "hip kip", "peeled paul" and "terri cloth" - I remember when the 5th series came out and I opened a pack and saw "terri cloth" - that image kind of startled me! I wasn't prepared for it!
Anyway I hope more people respond to this and post what got them hooked, etc.

What a cool thread.
For me it was pretty clear- the first day in my new school approx Dec '85. I'd transferred mid-year and was in 3rd grade. I didn't have any friends but some kid walked up and was like, "Check these out we all collect them!" It was Mixed Up MITCH and Live MIKE and was hooked.

When my brother and I were kids (me 3rd grade, he 1st) living in a po-dunk town in the sticks of northern AZ, my dad, an otr truck driver at the time, would bring home a few packs of GPK between trips. We would tear into them, eager to see the newest gore, punk, and humorous ideas to come from Topps. We looked forward to each new series. I still have most of our collection from back then which included a Semi no number. Unfortunately, someone wrote on it, a scrawled 9 in the border at the top, probably referring to it being 9th series. I know its not my handwriting, and back then we did what they were meant for, trading, so I cant rightfully blame my brother either, as it might have come from a collection we aquired from a friend. Even back then we hoped they would someday be of value, so we stashed them away in an old metal lunch box and stuck them up in the closet. But the charm and nostalgia are still as strong as ever. Despite being discouraged by the flashback series extreme numbers and prices, I doubt my love for them will ever die. Favorites include Vile Kyle, Pinned Penny, Mason Mace, Rocky Horror, Nervous Rex, Barb Wire... -Harley

A long time ago, when my dad used to be a volunteer fire fighter. I went into one of the offices and looked on the desk and I noticed a Kerosene KERRY sticker. (Maybe but I'm sure it could be Blazin BLAKE, but you get the point.) The sticker scared the daylights out of me on how menacing he was at burning down a school. For an eight year old that was scary to me.
Fast forward to 2001 (approx 10 years later) I went to a peddler's mall and saw a set of Garbage Pail Kids (OS4). I didn't buy it back then, but I went home and started looking on the Internet for the Garbage Pail Kid I saw long ago. At the time I didn't know the name.
In 2003 when the All New Series came out. I would thought that Kerosene Kerry would be on the All-New Series. But unfortunately he didn't.
Now the question people are probably asking right now....
When did I start to like Split Kit.
On April 4, 2006 I went to Meijer (a store I work at) to pick a movie (Chronicles of Narnia) for my mom and I noticed the Garbage Pail Kids cartoon DVD next to another DVD I was also planning to buy. I bought GPK and went home to watch it. That where I grew to like Split Kit and pretty much took over as my favorite Garbage Pail Kid.

i love the horror inspired ones the most. but the gpk sticker just take me back to the time when i was a kid would go get bread and milk for my mom and she would give me some change for a few packs. i realy had fun with these. i dont know what happened to all the gpk i had from my childhood. but anyways while on the sports card message board the other night i found out about the flashback series. which is great because i can now get all the ones i remember. there not the originals but i dont care. also i notice there are alot of special cards. paralels and what not.
so i ended up getting a case of series 2 flashback and a few boxes of series one flashback. while i think this is a great idea. i think this should be the last flashback series and they should focus on a brand new series. i hear it is up to series 22 ?

I remember exactly what the first GPK I ever saw was. In 3rd grade(1986), my friend Sean gave me a Mugged Marcus card. As a kid, I collected the 3rd series on. I was always kind of bummed I missed the 1st and 2nd series when they were out originally. Oh well, I was only 8yo. I remember constantly searching for loose change. Once I had 27 cents, I would walk to McNerney's pharmacy at the corner to buy a pack. I probably did this three or four times a day on the weekends. Good times!

For me, it all happened in ONE day. I was in 5th grade. There were 2 different 5th grade classes in my school and one day, my best friend who happened to be in the other class, met up with me at recess and said that we had to go find his friend from class because he was selling Garbage Pail Kids. I was like Garbage Pail what? ? So he tried to describe them to me as we walked around looking for this guy. When we found him, he pulled out a stack of cards and handed them to us. We were instantly mezmorized by them. My first question: How much? He said 5 cents each because they were his duplicates. I only had a quarter on me so I had to choose wisely. All were 2nd series and I picked: Patty Putty, Cheeky Charles, Odd Todd, Mark Bark, and Leaky Lindsey. I asked around where these could be found and was disappointed to hear they were sold out everywhere because of their popularity but to try 7-Elevens. Well, I didn't live near a 7-Eleven so I just headed home after school to find a place to put my new treasure. As I walked up to the front door of my house, another friend of mine who lived across the street yelled over to me "They have Garbage Pail Kids at the Quik Shop!!!" I ran in the house, through down my backpack, grabbed my wallet, and sprinted 2 blocks to the Quik Stop. We got inside and there it was, a half a box of series 2. I bought all I had money for....which I think was about 3 bucks....and my friend bought the rest. I never saw series 2 again in any store. |

The first series I ever saw was the 4th. I remember playing soccer when I was kid and at one of my games a kid on my team brought some and showed me. I remember seeing Max Axe, Bony Tony, and Duncan Pumpkin after that I was completely obsessed with the cards. ;D
