It comes down to personal taste. I think the problem arises when Topps uses sketch to describe a doodle. It can raise the bar of expectation.

It just seems like because a few artists have gone above and beyond with their sketches (sometimes even producing full color and/or finished pieces), anyone that produces something less is made fun of. It's one thing to say "I'm not very happy with this" but singling out individual artists, or calling sketches "garbage" seems a little rude/extreme to me. Then again, I'm a proud and very satisfied owner of a Pound ANS4 sketch, so what do I know? Thats awesome, ive got 2 of those, and i am very happy with both of them just like you are with yours. ( im being serious by the way !! ) But then again....they are still doodles.... and not sketches. If i put them next to my Wheatons i can clearly see the diference

Have you guys ever seen that John Pound interview where he talks about sketch cards? His mindset is that it's meant as a quickie, basically an autograph. I think that's a good way to think of them. Anything above and beyond is a bonus. If people disagree I understand that (especially if that's not how Topps is marketing them), but raging on the artists (some of which definitely read this board) just seems rude.

I dont think anyone is bashing on the Pound Auto Sketches, as i said before i love mine. Is it rude when members of the board rage on shitty concepts or bad final art? I understand where you are coming from but again id be super pissed to pull a shitty sketch, thats all. Some of the sketches are so bad, if i did them i would be embarrassed to show them to a friend, let alone submit them as a job well done....

I agree about it being a quickie like an autograph but atleast take time to make it presentable like an auto does no good to make it a scribble have pride and topps shouldn't put them in a pack as a hit

Is it rude when members of the board rage on shitty concepts or bad final art? I think the big difference (in my mind) is between saying "this card sucks" and "this artist sucks". I mean there's at least one artist whose cards I totally cannot stand, but I certainly wouldn't call him out by name. GPK fandom is a pretty tight-knit community and there's a pretty close connection between the artists and fans (compared to something like a typical TV show or comic book), so I'd be too worried about hurting his feelings.

I wouldn't worry about hurt feelings. In any business where your putting "something" out you have to have thick skin, otherwise your not going to last. I'm sure the artists themselves will tell you that. These sketch cards are being put out in the public forum as a product and if no one holds the artist to task, how are they ever going to improve? If an artist constantly puts out sloppy work I think it's a safe bet they are a crappy artist as it's a reflection of their talent. If an artist doesn't like that mantle then they should improve. I think some guys do go overboard. I do agree there are more tactful ways to show your displeasure. A lot of this would be avoided if Topps would just call these things doodles or quick sketches which again is just a doodle.

Exactly, this came up a dozen or more times during ANS 4, and the argument that the sketchcards were hardly sketches, and more like graphic signatures, or doodles, of the artists.

Dear God... please someone take away the crayola crayons from S. Taylor's son!... this has to be THE WORST GP...sorry it does not deserve even to use that adjective...the WORST DOODLE drawn in GPK history! For the next series please someone tell THE COMPANY to put it in the hire contract for the sketch artist and the BLIND person who approve them:...It doesn't count that you only sign the cards YOU have to be sober and don't accept any assistance from your 2 year's son! and again nothing personal against the artist but COME ON! The thing that gets me the most about this sketch are the rough pencil lines that have been left In !! Looks awful . I wouldn't pay money for this out of principle because I could do better myself . Why would I want a signed sketch card that was actually garbage ! I'd be gutted if I'd paid $30 for a hot pack and pulled this . I'm surprised by the quality to be fair
