He does some cool color sketches though. Check out the one i ended up winning from liz's break Well to be honest it could be a "good" sketch, IMO maybe removing the GPK banner and using this would be better But again is not against the artist, the question here is: how the art director/editor/guy with final call, approved that? These are still better than every piece of s**t lazy ass sketch Pound put into ANS4 lol

if it was a base card i'd totally agree, but they're sketches and i doubt colin or anyone has the time to go through 1000 of them. Besides they're freebies... But yeah it's a little bit of a letdown when you get a sketch only to find out it's this: We're all spoiled by the finals these guys put out. They just don't have the time to do 1000 quality sketches, that's why i personally feel the sketches should be numbered to 100 per artist. We'd get more quality stuff.

True, but from what i understand Colin doesn't have the final say... ...OK maybe the EDITOR/ ART DIRECTOR title only was created just to fill some space in the checklist cards... Well i did talk to him face to face a month ago and you'd be surprised at how much politics is involved. Again, i'm just putting it out there, but retail influences a lot of topps decisions, not just with gpk's. Chew on that for a while and i think you'll understand why a lot of hands are tied. Target is the only retailer that is still actively pushing baseball cards in stores... look around.. .it's a dying product (besides k-mart). It's all about gaming cards now (wizard, pokemon, etc). Without Target a lot of companies would be scrambling at the bits to keep product on retail shelves in the amount currently displayed at target. Topps jumps as high as target tells them to jump.

These are still better than every piece of s**t lazy ass sketch Pound put into ANS4 lol yeah.... inb4 BUT BRO... THEY'RE IN BLUE AND RED INK MAN!!!! but i don't think it was an issue of lazyness, it couldn't have been. Pound, like Diaz always put 100% into every card he does, which is why his work always shines, so i doubt, given the time, that he wouldn't have produced some amazing sketches. He was simply given a quota, by topps, to produce #X amount of sketch cards in 00:00X amount of time. Another example of an artist/employee whose hands are tied and forced to meet that quota.... (it could explain btw, why pound quit after ans7, he was worn out from doing all those sketches... which can't be very fun). Anyone have any ideas as to how many of those he did for ans4+?

I think I read somewhere that it was in the hundreds. Not being funny but most people would be happy with an autograph. The sketch is supplementary here. To say they're s**t is a bit ignorant. If Pound was asked to do 20 sketch cards for a series they'd probably be colour and most likely at least as good if not better than a colour rough. I think we're spoilt if we expect more than that.

I guess the standard has been set though.... I would hate to receive a rare card and it turn out to be a shitty doodle, F that topps save the money if thats the case and get some better base art going. BTW i love a good sketch (collect a lot of them) Kudos to the artists who put pride into the sketches regardless of the business side of things Also Ive never seen a Simko "doodle" have you?

That would be like trading a yellow minikin for a painted one. I'd love to see any one of a kind Lynch's you had from FB1 though. Hit me with a PM if you wanna talk trades. Check out my collection and you can see what I have. Keep an eye out for a pretty good update soon as well.

NO I haven't seen a Simko doodle. But I imagine that if Simko had 3000 sketches to do for one series you'd barely get a doodle from him either. I don't get this at all - comparing a doodle by Pound to a painted sketch by Simko from 2 completely different sets, 8 years apart. Excluding the Strephon Taylor sketchcard which was quite obviously knocked up in 10 minutes, asking whether Simko has ever produced a doodle in comparison with Pounds sketch (1 of several thousand he produced for ANS4 as was pointed out earlier) is incomparable. How many sketches do artists for BNS have to produce? 20 or so? In the time Pound had to do those, we're lucky we even got a doodle PLUS his auto. Considering his reputation and his historical links to the franchise, yeah, I'd be more than happy with a quick doodle with his auto, regardless of how the doodle looked. I think the issue for me is this. Why the fug are non-principle artists doing sketchcards in the first place!? Strephon Taylor, Colin Walton.....what's the point? Supply and demand again. Gotta fill a quota: X amounts of black and white sketches, X amount of painted sketches....... Walton: "Can you paint?" Janitor: "I can mop...." Walton: "Try mopping this small blank card with this magic marker. I need 5000 in 10 minutes. Thanks." Regardless of the artist, if you got a sketch for a split second you'd be as happy as anybody. You'd probably even ignore the fact that it looked like dogshit for a day or too and you'd almost definitely wonder who the hell the squiggly autograph was from before you decide not to share it on the UG as and quickly post a listing on ebay to get rid of the hideous thing. If somebody is selling s**t, someone will buy the s**t and all of a sudden there's a demand for s**t.

Lol Nolan i agree and also I like the "doodle sketches" Its simplistic and kinda cool. Do people ever stop to think that maybe just maybe that was the plan for those sketch cards? Everything else you see sketched by everyone are all basically the same same with little differences and they look great but nice to have something a bit different. I don't own one yet but would take that over another crappy base card any day

I WOULD LOVE TO BE SITTING AT THE TABLE WHEN TOPPS GO'S AHEAD AND GIVES THE FINAL APPROVAL ON SKETCHES OR THE BASE CARDS. hairball moll ? are you kidding me ? what about that card is gpk what casket casey ? totaly not worthy of being a bonus card. ALOT OF BNS 3 WAS ABSOLUTLY HORRIBLE . it is clear to me they are just rushing releases and hoping that we buy it. once they get all of there options in from the artists if they cant approve enough "worthy" cards to finish a set then just dont release one !!!! dont release a set until you can release one that the collectors will be happy with . if i was a director of a movie and had a great idea , if i didnt have a worthy ending i simply wouldnt release it until i had one ...... i know topps is in the business to make money but , there just going to continue to lose people. i never got a chance to collect any of the ans so not sure how bad some of those releases were , but this bns 3 release is so bad . i havent pre ordered any of the 2014 product and i wont be until i see some of the set. im all set ....

I guess I'm the only one who was stoked to get a Pound sketch back in the day. I mean, it was a sketch (albeit done in ten seconds) by THE GPK artist, with his signature on it. John Lennon drew ten second sketches of himself. I can't imagine anyone crying about that.

Would love for that to go up on eBay with a starting bid of zero and no reserve so you could see your value. I love how there is basically the same go round re: sketches with every release since FB2. I have since learned to take the good with the bad and enjoy finding something good in each release. Don't knock Taylor too much. I can appreciate what he is doing with a basic set of crayola markers.

Well that green ink Pound sketch from what I understand was not pack inserted and very few are known to exist. Supposedly people got them from Pound direct? I looked all over when I put together my ANS Pound sketch set and couldn't find one. Probably never will.

*Sigh* I've collected & enjoyed all series of GPK (All FB aside)and this is the first series I've been disappointed. Is it just me or is the card stock they used even worse/cheap? Just holding/touching the cards did not feel like past quality. I've only seen just over half of the set thanks to only scoring 4 double packs so far. However, If the card was bad, it was really bad. If the card had a good idea/concept it ended up falling short of what we know they are capable of. When it comes to "Gross" toys/collectibles (and more are popping up again in other forms) nothing should be grosser that GPK. A lot of cards in this series leave some gross to be desired. Let's take Love Struck Chuck... RUBBER ARROWS? ... -__- This set makes me feel so cynical So I'm going to stop and however list some I do enjoy. Shane Saw, Lost Lewis, Tasted Tony, Mad Max, Roy Bot... Wow... I thought my list would be much longer... *Sigh* Edit: Almost forgot, they also pulled the pickle trick on us. Previous double packs had 22 cards while BNS3 double packs have 21. Seems minor but it adds up if you buy a lot of GPK.

ALOT OF BNS 3 WAS ABSOLUTLY HORRIBLE . i never got a chance to collect any of the ans so not sure how bad some of those releases were.. BNS1 was by far the worst of the 3 bns sets. 3 is better than 2 at this point. I've critiqued the art hard the past 4 days and it's definitely getting better, especially when comparing 1 to 3. What i have noticed is simply a lack of understanding of the importance of uniformity in a card line. It can make all the difference in sales and more importantly in being able to maintain a fanbase. I did let them know that it should get more priority so i hope they take that notion seriouly, but we have to be honest with them and it is improving. The scaling of the characters on the cards are also improving. The card stock could be a little more glossy like the ANS line but the card stock is good. The color of the cards has improved dramatically since bns1, so that was a huge plus. This series feels a lot like ANS in that regard, but OS in nature. I'm still planning on making a thread of the best of BNS3 when geepeekay gets his cards up on his site, when he does, i'll be able to pinpoint those improvements to you. You saw my thread on ANS and as you saw there are a lot of great cards in those sets. It's just hit and miss since OS2. Again, comes down to the number of artists working on a series and how well they work together. It's a group project, yet topps isn't asking them to hold hands. They're all working independently so it really comes down to the art director giving them the right direction. Keep in mind most of these guys were new to the game when BNS1 came out. They are trying to reach out to us, slowly but surely. Hopefully they'll continue to do so. We have to help them understand what made OS1 and OS2 so great. It's not because of the value of those cards, but moreso simply due to the card sets as a whole, aesthetically. Any series can stand alone in that regard. If we could combine the color/card stock from ANS5-7 with OS1-2 principles/style/cpk likeness then we'd have the perfect set. I think you'd agree, using that legend, that BNS3 is as close to that dream set as we've ever seen. With that said, the jan2014 release will mark a very important point in the gpk franchise, if they screw that series up, it may very well be all downhill from there on out. But for now things are ok, bns3 is a good release. It's not great because of some of dave gross' cards (emphasis on some because he had some great cards in this series) which lack color and a true gpk likeness and cause a break in unformity, but other than that, the rest of the cards are taking the franchise in the right direction.

So far my general assessment is the coloring and shading and size uniformity is the biggest error they made with the overall set. It is hard to judge concepts due to the subjective nature of art. The next thing would be the non-uniformity of the CPK look of the faces. They should tape copies of all the finals on a wall and eliminate or rework the ones that don't match. Maybe some backgrounds could include more garbage in them to give them a grittier feel. For example, the Nessie concept is a little out of place since it is in a pristine lake. The old cards in the background gave a sense of some kind of grosser alternative universe.

Talking about shoes and mittens, Cats are supposed to have paws, right? This is one of the best cards IMO..... Maybe because I always liked hello kitty. And the hands are spot on. Its a HELLO KITTY/Sanrio spoof. =) YEP!!! I know my Hello Kitty!! 1 word... PURR.

I am somewhat familiar with hello kitty (having a younger sister), but I wasn't sure at first if that was what they were spoofing... maybe I'm dense, but I had to look up an image of hello kitty. I think the style of drawing got compromised and could have been pulled-off a little better. This is why parodies are tricky because there will be many people not as familiar with the subject and if the artwork doesn't stand on its own, it will not be as appreciated.
Anyway, I'm not bashing BNS3, I just think little things that are easier to control from an art director's perspective could have been done to make the set stronger as a whole. I am looking forward to 2014. There they need to make sure it is a very strong and consistent start or it will affect future releases like BNS1 did. They started that set (BNS1) with one of the weakest non-GPK characters they could have possibly chosen, I think they were trying to hit a totally different demo for the start of the series and the elements in that artwork unfortunately keep creeping up in the latest artwork (and now minikins).

The hello kitty spoof gpk isn't the problem frosty. It's pretty good actually. Just felt it didn't mesh with the rest of the cards in the set because of the unblended backgroun and the dark thick countour lines on the character (yes i realize he was trying to make it cartoony but the charlie brown gpk is a better representation of what works and what doesn't, plus by staying consistent with the charlie brown gpk, it wouldn't stand out so much as a dud even with the unblended background (at first glance)). As a digital artist myself, i just find myself cringing when i see little things like that unfinished. It's so easy to fix too.... I could do that in a few minutes in photoshop using a few filters. Maybe he's not as familiar with that medium and someone else responsible for touching it up didn't have time or forgot, but it still should have been done. p.s: i didn't know it was hello kitty either till you told us.
