Welcome to the board Stizzco. Thanks for the post. My original point about second guessing was about the product quality more than the price. I understand price is a major factor to a lot of us though and it could drive people away just as easy. It seems we are split 50/50 of people sick of spending lots of money and people wanting a better product for their money. How many people on here are still actually looking through the terrible BNS2 art and concepts regularly? How many people have just filed it away never to be seen again? I'm guessing there are some severely neglected and sad base sets sitting in top loaders/binders. It's been a few weeks since I quit the BNS and it feels good. I sold most of my BNS1 inserts and chucked the base set in the trash. The chrome set just validated my decision to quit even more. I honestly don't miss it. The only thing that sucks is seeing the new GPK images on the board but I can live with that. ;D Cory, I see your point. I went back and took a much closer look at the concepts and art in BNS 1 and 2. I must admit that not every card is a winner. In fact it's pretty obvious a lot of designs were lazily phoned in. BNS1 and 2 combined have so many lame filler cards that I might have a hard time picking 50 cards/concepts that I truly really like and think are original. The completest in me still insists I build a mint base set. And there are concepts in the new series I like enough to seek rare inserts of, 33a Ray Spray for instance - very edgy and relevant. I'd love an artist signed card or gold parallel of THAT card. But I wont go out of my way to find rare inserts and parallels of say 39a Flatfoot Frank, I just don't really like that card. If you think back to the mid eighties when waxpacks were a quarter, you'd get 5 kids on cheap card stock and hope that they were properly centered and not all gummed up. We collected them despite the fact that there were no rare inserts or parallel sets. We were also mostly kids and in that pop culture space and time, GPK were quite relevant because of the insane Cabbage Patch Kid Doll craze. Anyone with younger sisters in the eighties knows what I'm talking about. I don't believe GPK would have been as culturally relevant nor as commercially successful if CPK hadn't first been monster craze in its own right. Now we get a much higher quality product all the way from the wrapper to the shiny cards themselves. Yet the content itself is weaker. Also the only real significant cultural relevance GPK has in todays world is that it is a nostalgic nectar of the mid eighties. Cabbage Patch Dolls still exist, but are nowhere near as popular as they were 25 years ago. With that in mind, I can't help but think BNS were marketed solely to feed off that nostalgia now that the kids of the eighties are entering their 40's. To me this explains all the parallels and other gimmicks. I do wish the overall theme of BNS1 and 2 would have been much edgier, perhaps I would not feel so ripped of paying 30 cents a card if the art was consistently amazing. 67a Egg Sheldon? Really? To be fair, some of the art and concepts in the OS were lame too. OS 1 is the only series that I truly like all 41 cards. Its no different then when I go to a casino with my friends or whatever. If I dont get anything good I do not get bent out of shape because i will not spend enough to even notice a dent in my bank account. Agreed. When seeking rare inserts, its very much like gambling. Gotta know when to walk away.

I feel like they're making it harder to be a die hard fan. I love getting the rare cards, collecting the weird unintentional variations of the OS's, etc. But when they force the variations by running multiple parallel sets that are insanely difficult to complete it really makes it so that finding a rare card in a pack isn't all that thrilling when it's just a dumb parallel for a set you know you'll never complete.
Getting a printing plate, or a sketch/auto card is pretty awesome, but they're so rare in retail packs, and who sells hobby packs? You have to buy a box to get a better chance, and for a lot of us that is no longer feasible as we have other financial obligations that take a precedence for our money. We can afford 2.50 here and there, or maybe a little more to guarantee a set on ebay, but if we want to have a chance at something actually rare from a pack we have to buy hobby boxes.
I feel a bit jaded by that. Especially with the BNS2 bonus cards. Just makes it frustrating instead of fun.

The first time I saw a different colored border, I said hell no, f this.
The first time I saw FB, I said hell no f this.
This is probably why I'm not being burnt out. I still have fun collecting only the parts I want to collect. How ever they are starting to screw me in the Bonus card department. I love all new artwork so I gotta have them, to an extent.
The "product" issue is a personal thing. I love the product I've been getting. Sure there's a few cards that I look at an say wtf? Overall I love it.
The "money" issues can some what be solved by going back to old school trading to complete. Stop buying cases. Did you have to buy a case as a kid? LOL no so why now?
Now, as far as how Topps feels... As long as those feeders an retail boxes keep coming up empty, they will continue the same path. They're not worried about a petition from the minority.

Good points, I have been thinking Topps or retailers should not sell cases to end collectors. They seem to be in a catch-22 scenario, where they need to, but it is a crutch. GPK is supposed to symbolize a simpler time for us in the older demo. Keep it simple and don't chase the extra crap. I am a newer collector in the older demo, and I am baffled by how complex the hobby is for some people, employing strategy and significant cash. It is great to have big fans of the franchise to keep it going and visible, but the money they are pouring in is making the product less accessible and more expensive for the average fan. If you have significant amounts of stuff just sitting around in storage, and it seems like a burden, let it loose for others to enjoy. I also find it funny that GPK started as a parody in a way also made fun of how people were going nuts for these creepy dolls, and now...

I think everyone should be allowed to collect at whatever they're comfortable with. Some people are obsessive, but not everyone. Topps shouldn't really limit who buys what, and how much. At an earlier point in my life, during ANS, I had the money to buy crazy amount of boxes, and I'm glad that I did. Now I have these unopened boxes that have just been sitting in stoage, like you mentioned, and I'm trading them here for the stuff I can't afford now. It's really hard sometimes to see things you want, at a price you don't want to spend, but honestly you have to learn to live within your means. heh.

Well so sorry if us bigger collectors made it tough for you newer guys. Maybe we shouldn't be allowed to buy what we collect to make it fair for everyone will all take our dollars elsewhere and let's see how long Topps supports this strategy of only letting collectors who don't want to spend alot for their product goes ! I betcha it doesn't last a day. I can't speak for other collectors but i never look at my stuff as a burden i look at is a gift. I'm proud that i work my azz off so i can buy what i like! The whole problem with thinking like it's not reasonable and accesible for other fans is we all have the same chance to get stuff. If you think it's not fair that you can't get exactly what you want at the prices you want that sucks but this is America it happens. Sometimes to get what you want you have to get out of bed a little earlier then the guy next door.

No need to apologize or get defensive about what I wrote. Let's save "this is America" for something important. Topps can control how they distribute product however they want because "this is America". I am not complaining, but saying in general, the more extreme people in a way impact the average person interested in a hobby. It happens with just about anything. I mentioned that I am newer because I am surprised how people buy such vast amounts of the product. I had no idea people would do this, and I happen to not think of it in a positive way. If people are wondering why GPK and baseball cards do not sell as much anymore, this may be a reason. Having said that, I do appreciate the extreme collectors since it is relatively cheap to collect more than 20 year old stuff today due to all that hoarding. =)

dodgerbaby,
I really don't understand what you are upset about.
Do you really think that these "extreme" collectors are not letting the "average" collector buy packs of GPK?
I don't see any shortage in the availability of BNS1 or BNS2 unopened packs, boxes or cases for sale. They are still for sale everywhere.
In fact, these "extreme" collectors, who I assume are going after c cards, gold cards, sketches and plates, make it much easier and cheaper for the average collector to pick up a base set.
The base set is 146 cards. A pack that costs $2.49 has 9 base cards and 1 parallel card. So to complete a base set, a collector would have to buy at least 17 packs (and hope to get few doubles) to make the set. 17 packs * $2.49 = $42.33 + tax.
You can pick up a base set on eBay for less than $10 shipped. Or I'm sure if you asked one of the "extreme" collectors on this forum, they would probably send you one for the cost of postage.
Where is the problem?
Right now, the trading card hobby is more focused on "hits" than on completing base sets. Once the collectors get their "hits" they'll move onto the next product. Whether or not that is a good thing is certainly debatable. But I don't think passionate collectors are ruining it for "average" collectors.

What he's saying is more or less this:
That dealers are buying into topps' marketing gimmicks (sketch cards, rare inserts). Topps sees their dollars as reason to continue on with those gimmicks.
Sadly, nothing can be done now. Topps has already changed the way they market gpk's more on par with their other lines of cards and the potential to make $$$ is now more plausible than ever, especially with the new chrome line debuting later this year.
I remember when star wars figures first came back out in 1995 and everyone was hoarding them thinking they'd strike it rich. That could have been the case had it not been for the fact that they were mass produced and subsequent lines came out with better sculpts/articulation leaving collectors with 50 versions of darth vader. That type of saturation is hitting the market with gpk's now (like adam bomb).
We just gotta enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts because as we all know, nothing lasts forever. Topps is gonna take us for a wild ride till we have 50 of the same cards, all with different borders/colors and the same characters in 30 different poses. Unlike the past, we can at least prepare ourselves for it mentally and shop wisely, saving our money for the liquidation to come in future years. It's going to be a feast haha.

dodgerbaby, I really don't understand what you are upset about. I am not upset, sorry if it has come off that way. I agree with everything you have said. My comments are just a reaction to something that is new to me and for many here is completely normal since they have been collecting for a while. In a way it is my 1986 self saying WTF? I am in the camp of just collecting the base set and get annoyed with the prospect of finding parallels that get in the way of making a full set. Just picking up a base set on eBay seems not so fun, but oh well. I hope I do not get into them....

Collecting is fun. Lets all have fun collecting. When my collecting becomes a job or anything more than fun, I will stop. I buy enough to enjoy opening new packs and collecting stuff that I loved as a kid. GPK collecting is a relatively inexpensive hobby as OS sets are only like $20 except 1 and 2. The art is expensive but not really that expensive. Are prices too high? For some things yes but when its on ebay its really fair market at that point. If i want something more than someone else I will pay more. Are there OCD people? Yep, I am one of them but I care about collecting different things than others, which is what makes our hobby cool - there are no rules. The only thing I ask of anyone collecting is that they post pics of their stuff here and at least keep in touch with the forum so great rare items never get lost and disappear. As for people keeping stuff in storage, i guess its their choice. I personally display all of my cool stuff and store some of the boring things, like sealed boxes that I dont want to be tempted to open (out of sight out of mind).

What he's saying is more or less this: That dealers are buying into topps' marketing gimmicks (sketch cards, rare inserts). Topps sees their dollars as reason to continue on with those gimmicks. I don't think many dealers buy into the marketing gimmicks. There are only a few online dealers that break cases and packs to resell GPKs. Most of the dealers around here open very few cases because they have a hard time breaking even unless they get some super rare card to resell (which doesn't happen very often). At some point this oversaturation will hit a critical mass and Topps will slow down the release schedule and craziness to adapt. It will probably be ugly for some, but a good opportunity for others to start collecting since the cards will be cheap(er). As artful dodger said, collecting should be fun. The only investment I make is the time spent with my family opening up packs and trying to put together sets. Money is money and it will either sit in the bank or get spent on something else. There will always be someone else that has much more disposable income than me who will buy cool GPK stuff that I can't afford. As long as they share pictures of their finds I can be happy living vicariously through them.

Collecting should be for fun, first and foremost. In fact, anything entertainment wise (collecting/Gaming/Movies ect) should again be first and foremost for fun. But, investment in said products is important too. Topps are a big-business, and the bottom line is the only thing they fully understand at all times. We GPK fans, old school/new school alike are nothing but numbers and statistics, they go over flowcharts to try and understand us.
Extortion and debt go hand-in-hand and Topps knows knows very, very well. Fun is what we love GPK's for, but investment sadly, is what Topps loves. If a collector can turn good profit from his GPK's, more power to him. Nothing wrong with good independent entrupunerism. After all, if you can get paid for doing (or in this case collecting) what you love, you might as well get paid.

Thanks much for the kind words gpk1982. And kudos to your comments, welcome to the U.G. The key problems with BNS is the following, to me anyway. 1. To damn big of a base-set. 2. To many parallel's. 3. To many insert's. 4. Sub-par quality offerings with bonus boxes. 5. To many pop-culture spoofs, not enough original abstract or risque concepts like Pound used to crank out. In short, more is less and original concepts beat the quick fix spoofs.

I've seen that multiple people do not like pop culture spoofs. Can someone explain why they don't like these? I agree some are lame (esp. Jersey Shore ones) but, I enjoy them for what they are...

what mr.1985 said, less is more
i'd definitely like to see topps giving artists more time to complete sketch cards, the quality of which mirrors their return cards. having each do 1500 or so, as i've heard, is the reason why these cards are rushed. Even john pounds' ans4 sketches were rushed, with some variations being only that they offer a different smile or expression.
The base set being big is not my concern, the difficulty in acquiring even the simplest of insert sets, is. There has to be a payoff for people buying these packs. Noone is doing it for the foldees. Let's see less 1:25 odds and more 1:6 for the cards. (because there's at least 110a/b). Minikins at 1:12 is understandeable considering there's only 26 diff characters. I wonder what low silvers are at this point. 1:96? anyways i digress..
The whole point of this story, if topps is reading this, is simply that.... if you want people to buy retail (don't count on gpkug to do it because we've paid our dues...), then topps needs to make the chase fun and exciting, but not making it so hard that they just end up buying the sets on ebay (thinking they'll never be able to get a complete subset or affford to buy more packs to do it).

I hope i pull something nice but if i can get a base set out of it then i'm happy. I did pre order bsn3 and a hobby box of chrome but thats all i am spending on it. Maybe trade some with you guys like we did back in the day. For me its about the fun and when i lose that there going back in storage for another 20 years

I got my first cards in 85 when I was in 3rd grade. I loved them and cherished them and bought them until about 6th series. Over the years I've jumped in and out of adding to my collection. About 10 years ago I was going through one of my GPKS peaks...I got everything I needed to complete my series off feebay. I was happily surprised at the time that I could get OS3 to OS15 at like $15 for a full mint set. So I bought those and a some random foreign ones using OS1 and OS2 art, because I love the ARTWORK. I pretty much ignored the cards from the point when they stopped looking like what I loved until now. To me, the ANS and everything I have seen of BNS1 looks like garbage. Once I saw some of the cards from BNS2 however, to me it sparked that good feeling I have when looking at the early series. It makes me really excited to see BNS3. I guess it would be cool to have a sketch or two and I'll be kind of looking here and there, but I'm not a completist and a base set will be good with me. I just got a BNS2 base set plus 10 foldees for $6. I'll spend a little on the bonus cards I like..which I happen to think are some of the best of the new cards, and call it a day. That's about it, no reason to go crazy and spend a crapton of money. So yeah, for this old schooler, the BNS looks pretty good. ANS, not so much.

GPK's are truly sport cards now. Topps marketing model has completely turned its back on their fans and is targeted at sports card dealers who are excited at the prospect of selling their cards on ebay for inflated prices now that gpks are at their peak popularity again. Guys like Damien have made it an easy decision. Their propaganda is destroying the fun-trade happy community i remember joining 2 years ago here. I see nothing but posts asking if these cards will be worth something in the future. Having seen the 90's implosion of sports cards, it's sad to see and it will be even sadder to see many of these new cards ending up on ebay years from now for pennies on the dollar when people realize they made bad investment decisions. I urge some of you to rethink your strategy on the new cards, and focus more on keeping artists employed by cutting topps out as the 3rd party. Even the newest gimmick, asking people to buy directly from topps to obtain autographs from their artists is nothing but a cash grab, when many of those same artists are on this site and more than willing to give, for free even, their time and energy into creating something special for interested members. We need to collectively funnel our money to the right people and back the right projects instead of mindlessly buying anything topps puts out. That's what happened early on with ANS before topps hired additional artists who could capture the original gpk feel again and who helped keep gpk's going for 4 new series till ans7. With that said, i'm looking forward to minikins. Hopefully topps can at least deliver with pvc collectors and long time fans of cheap toys. If i'm going to throw money away to topps, it will be with the product that i think has the best future. I already see a second series of minikins on the horizon. i just hope it's not till spring 2014 with how many things are coming out later this year.

My name is Ty Hope (same as my name here, go figure!) I also post on Blowout, and Freedom Card Board (under the same name Ty Hope). Sooooo.... any questions? Please don't accuse me of being someone else again until you get your facts straight. doesn't matter. You're just regurgetating the same selling points as damien. that was the greater point. It does matter because you called me a liar. Who in the hell are you??? That's right, nobody. And no, I'm not selling anything. Read my post. All I said is that you should collect what you enjoy. If you don't rip boxes, you can by singles of what you want on ebay. How in ANY way is that me selling something? I have an ebay account but don't sell. Check for yourself if you want. I made a point, you called me out. I'm done with you.

And I have no idea who Damien is either. I've been here less than a month and don't know ANYBODY by name.

I agree with this for most of GPKs, even most of the OS stuff. I definitely do not expect any of the new stuff to really be valuable. I mean I can buy an OS3 set for $25. No way BNS1 will ever be worth more than OS3 and that set is almost 30 yrs old. This is why I collect for fun and am not banking on any collectibles going up in value and could really care less if they go down. I collect because I like it not for any $$$.

Exactly. Collect for fun. If you want value, invest in stocks.
It's all about what makes you happy as a collector. This is, afterall, a hobby.

Making it impossible/expensive to collect a full set means I just won't collect. I buy a base set and a box to open with my son. I am more of a fan than a collector.

I really wish all the paranoid 'troll hunting' would stop. You did essentially call him a liar, and for no good reason as far as I can see. Some of you on this board act worse than the children from the f**ked company.com forums during the dot com bust. Not everyone who posts views contrary to your own is a freaking troll! Please stop with the baseless accusations and maybe take some meds.
